Mourinho: Further Anatomy of a Winner Page 25

by Patrick Barclay

A man for all seasons: Mourinho and Newcastle assistant Dean Saunders watch through the sleet as Chelsea go out of the FA Cup at St James’ Park. In the warmer conditions offered by Tel Aviv, Mourinho addresses Israeli and Palestinian coaches. At Liverpool, after the final whistle has sounded on Chelsea’s Champions League campaign, there are congratulations for the victors (Empics).

Barcelona moments. Drained but happy: Mourinho with Joe Cole after the aggregate victory (Empics). Trouble brews as Anders Frisk, the referee in the Nou Camp, falls out with Didier Drogba, whose red card Mourinho mentioned in the comments that indirectly led to Frisk’s retirement (Coloursport). And at Bolton in the spring there is joy as Frank Lampard’s second goal seals the title (Empics).

One of the boys: After Chelsea have clinched the Premiership title at Bolton, John Terry gives Mourinho the sort of hug a player gives to another. In the background are Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba (Empics).

Happy family: Mourinho with his wife and children at the UK premiere of the film The Incredibles in London in November 2004. The Mourinhos have followed an old Portuguese custom by passing on their Christian names to their offspring: the son is called José Mario and the daughter Matilde. In order to avoid confusion, they have nicknames (Getty Images).

José points out how many trophies he’s won for Chelsea, as he’s about to lift the FA Cup after victory over Manchester United (Press Association).

Scenes from the final season: a disgruntled Mourinho is distinctly unimpressed at Villa Park (PA); more frustration on the touchline during José’s final match at Stamford Bridge, against Rosenborg (PA); Chelsea fans demonstrate outside Stamford Bridge the morning after the Special One departs (AFP/Getty Images).

Scenes of triumph from the semi-final and final of the 2010 Champions League, as Mourinho leads Inter to the trophy in characteristically understated fashion (both PA). Marco Materazzi, for one, was devastated upon Mourinho’s departure from the San Siro (Getty Images).

Mourinho moves into the Bernabéu, May 2010 … (PA).

… the first trophy against Barcelona in the Spanish cup final (Getty) … But Pep Guardiola gets the better of Mourinho over two legs in the Champions League (PA).

‘I am José Mourinho and I don’t change …’ (PA).
