My Brother's Best Friend - A Second Chance Romance (San Bravado Billionaire's Club Book 8) Page 15

“You doing okay over there?” asked Luz, her chocolate brown eyes on me.

“I think so,” I said. “Just more comfortable being back here than out there.”

“That Jordan,” said Luz, shaking her head. “He’s a real…mmm!”

She shook her shoulders with a big smile on her face.

  “Yeah,” I said. “He’s cute, I guess.”

“You guess?” said Luz. “Man looks like he was carved out of marble. The things I’d do to him…if I were single, of course.”

“Luz!” I said, laughing as I looked around the kitchen, worried that someone might be listening in.

“Hey,” she said, totally unapologetic. “I know what I like.”

I turned my attention back to the food, the rich scent of duck cooking now heavy in the air. But as I made preparations for the main course, I couldn’t get Jordan out of my head. He lingered in my thoughts, and every time I closed my eyes, even for a second, there he was, that cocky, sexy little smile on his face. The feeling of his hand, warm and strong, was still fresh on my skin.

But I didn’t have time to stand there and daydream about the boss’s son. The guests would soon be done with their salads, and I wanted the main course to follow right on the heels of the salad.

A beep from the oven signaled that the ducks were ready. I hurried over and opened the oven, the scent of the cooking meat so heavenly that I almost dropped to my knees right then and there. The skins of the ducks were roasted to perfection, golden-brown and glistening with simmering juices. The animal part of my brain desperately wanted to take a bite, and I had to remind myself that my job was to cook, not to eat.

“Damn, that smells good!” said Luz.

“Can’t go wrong with a classic,” I said, taking the first tray out of the oven and setting it on the counter.

  “Okay,” said Luz. “What’s next?”

“Next is plating,” I said. “This is a pretty simple dish, so we need to top them with that orange sauce over there and finish with a little dab of a few strands of orange peel.”

“I think I can handle that,” said Luz.

We got right to it. Together, the two of us plated the ducks, one by one. As soon as we finished, I realized that there was one left over. Perplexed, I checked the guest list that Mr. King had provided for me. Sure enough, there was one more duck than guests.

That’s when I remembered Mr. King’s request. Still flummoxed, I hurriedly pulled out my phone and sent him a text letting him know that the main course was ready. Seconds later, he appeared at the entrance to the kitchen.

“All ready to go?” he asked before taking a long, slow sniff of the air.

“Yep,” I said. “Just need to bring them out.”

“Great,” he said. “And you surely noticed that there’s one extra, correct?”

  “I…I did,” I said.

“And you noticed that there’s an extra seat?”

  “I did.”

“They both belong to you,” he said with a smile. “Come join us for dinner, Chloe.”

With that, he turned on his heels and disappeared back into the dining room, not giving me a chance to respond.
