I collapse on Slade, into the safety of him.
“Stay safe, Slade,” I murmur.
“Stay strong, princess,” he returns, before sleep guides us in.
My cell phone rouses me from the sex-induced sleep. I don’t want to come back to the rest of the world yet, but I know I must. I’m the most relaxed I’ve been in years. My body is completely sated, and the warmth of Avery’s body in my arms, pressed against me, feels so good. I want to stay here for the rest of my life, in the middle of heaven with my girl, until we grow old and the world is a better place.
Taking a breath, I make myself reach for my cell. Our club’s dynamic is all up in the air as it is, without me flaking on them when they need me. “Yeah,” I whisper, slipping Avery’s arm from my waist and moving from the bed to the bathroom so I can speak without waking her.
“Rhiannon called from the station. She was outside and needed picking up,” Scorch tells me on a rushed breath. Thank fucking Christ. I thought that chief bastard would hold her longer just to piss us off.
My heart beats faster, but there’s an edge to his tone. “And?”
“I came to get her. She’s not here but her phone is smashed on the floor.”
“It has to be Brenner, but he won’t hurt her.” I reassure myself, not just him.
“I had Copper hack the CCTV camera from a bank across the street that looks straight over the parking lot.”
“Just spit it the fuck out!”
“It’s not Brenner. Buzz took her.”
