Forever With Him Page 26

“It’s okay I have one in my—“

“Shit,” he said again, only this time he’d pulled out the sexy nerd glasses and his phone. “I’m so sorry to have to do this, but I can’t stay. I didn’t realize how late it’d gotten.” He seemed perturbed and more ruffled than I’d imagined possible from a man who’d seemed so calm and thoughtful all night.

“It’s okay. Can I do something?”

“No, no. It’s fine,” he said, backing away from me. That made me want to chase him for some reason, but I didn’t get the chance. He doubled back and pulled me to him. His lips crashed onto mine and he kissed me like it was his last kiss on earth. Forever.

Then he turned and jogged—almost ran, actually—down the hallway and out of sight.

I could still feel his lips on mine and a part of me felt so whiplashed by his abrupt departure I had to do a double take to make sure we weren’t still kissing. My fingers went to my lips in a futile effort to connect. But he was gone.

I retraced our steps and wandered slowly along the path and back into the reception. Once in the room, I was immediately pulled onto the dance floor by Nikki who was glistening with the sheen of a beautiful bride but smiling the way she ha been all day. I wondered if her cheeks would be sore in the morning. She linked arms with me and we danced to all here eighties favorites until I was mopping plain old sweat from my face and begging to take a water break.

It didn’t seem worth trying to find Table Ten when there was a perfectly good—and now empty—bar with cold glasses of water. I downed several and looked around at the other guests. Most of the people who were still on the dance floor or nursing drinks were Nikki and Chris’s close friends. I felt a little guilty that I’d missed half the reception, but not that guilty. Nikki wouldn’t care, and I’d been there for the first dance and the toasts.

I didn’t want to hassle Nikki with questions about Finn on her wedding night, but I also really did. It was just so weird. The reception was starting to wind down but Nikki couldn’t be pulled from the dance floor. Even Chris had sat out the last few songs.

I decided I could just as easily ask him my questions. He probably knew most of Nikki’s friends by this point, at least friends who were close enough to merit an invitation to their wedding. So I pulled a chair over to his and sat down.

“Congratulations, Mr. Nikki,” I said, giving him a kiss on the cheek.

“You got that right. I definitely got the better end of the deal here.”

“Oh, I’m not so sure about that. I’m pretty sure Nikki would call herself the lucky one.”

He smiled and I almost had to shield my eyes from his charisma. It was really no wonder he could take over a movie screen. “You enjoying your night?”

“I am. Actually, I enjoyed a certain friend of Nikki’s who I wanted to ask you about.”

  “Oh yeah? Ask away.”

“His name’s Finn. Do you know him?”

Chris didn’t answer immediately. I turned and saw his gaze fixed firmly on Nikki, who was now barefoot and dancing in a circle of friends. The smile on his face said more about their future together than any of their vows. And their vows had been beautiful.

When he finally tore his attention away from her his smile had dimmed a bit. “Wait, you hooked up with Finn?”

“I mean… a little. Why, is he married or something?”

“Did you two not talk at all?”

“We talked a little. But then he abruptly had to leave, which was kind of strange. And now you’re freaking me out.”

Chris shook his head. “Well, I’m not surprised he left abruptly. He has a ten o’clock curfew.”

“What kind of man has a curfew?”

“The kind who’s wearing an ankle monitor because he’s under house arrest.”
