She turned to face him, shaking her head decisively. “Not at all. It’s just… more than I expected, that’s all.”
Sean looked down at her gravely. “It is a very serious commitment you made, Elizabeth.”
Elizabeth nodded just as seriously. “I realise that.” She was lying in bed with a man she had just sworn loyalty and obedience to for the rest of her life. It was hard not to realise how serious it was.
She’d known that going into it, of course. It was part of the reason why she’d chosen this path. But now it was real. And there was no backing out. She couldn’t have made a more binding promise. Marriage, in comparison, was a mere offhand agreement.
Sean raised himself on one elbow, watching her quietly. “Do you still want to do this, Beth?” he asked softly.
Elizabeth took a deep breath and nodded. “I do.” She smiled at him, and he lent forwards and kissed her, pulling her back down onto the bed again.
