That wasn’t his real name, was it? “Christopher,” she murmured out loud, remembering how he’d told her his real name the night before.

  “Yeah.”

“You brought me up to bed?”

  “Yeah.”

Kara shifted a little, feeling the sheets rubbing against her bare skin. “Did you undress me?”

Even in the darkness, she was certain that she could hear the man grin! “A little.”

Kara pulled back her hand, about to hit the man. But then, she suddenly remembered one of his remarks from earlier in the evening, and a grin appeared on her own face. Instead of hitting the man, she leaned in, moving slowly closer until she could feel his face, less than an inch from hers.

Without saying a word, Kara leaned in, her lips finding his.

The first kiss was slow, gentle - but Kara threw a leg over the man, climbing up to lay half on top of him, and his hands tightened around her body in response. They broke apart for air, then came back together, their lips more insistent. Kara felt the man’s tongue slide out, probing at her lips, and she parted to let it in.

Still kissing passionately, Cross’s arms tightened, shifting Kara up on top of him. Down between her legs as she straddled him, she could feel the man yearning for her. He was rock hard, pushing up.

Kara slid her hips up and down, rubbing against him even through the fabric of her underwear and his boxers. He broke apart from the kiss, a low moan slipping out of his lips. Kara wanted to make the same noise - and she did so, bending around to breathe it out into his ear.

She kissed at his earlobe, giving it a little nibble. She could smell him on the sheets, the aroma driving her to push down harder with her body, up against his. Her breasts rubbed across his bare chest, and she was certain that his hands were itching to wrap around them, to give them a powerful squeeze. He was breathing hard, his chest rising up to meet hers before falling away as he sucked in another breath. Beneath her, his hips were also moving, in sync with hers, their bodies coming together, practicing the complementary rhythms that their ancestors had shared together for thousands of years.

Her mouth was still up at Cross’s earlobe, her breath hot against the back of his neck. “Do you want me?” she whispered, her voice husky with desire.

“Oh, yes,” he groaned back, one of his hands creeping up over her bare back.

“You want to fuck me?” she asked him.

  “Yes,” he repeated back.

  “Tell me. Say it.”

The man sounded as if he was about to explode. “Oh, Kara, I want to fuck you!” It was half a demand, and half a plea.

  Perfect.

  CHAPTER 13

“Tell me,” Kara whispered to the man.

“Yes,” he cried back, as he pulsed beneath her, their bodies pressed together in the darkness of the bedroom. “Yes, I want to fuck you!”

Even though he couldn’t see her expression (or perhaps because of that very fact), Kara’s lips curled up in a twisted smile.

  Perfect.

In a sudden flurry of movement, Kara sat up, rolling off of the man, landing back down on the bed beside him. She could feel his disbelief, his stunned confusion. “Wha?” he choked out, and she almost burst out into laughter.

“I told you that I’d make you explode,” she whispered back to him, still feeling the residual heat of where his body had pushed in between her thighs. “You’re not getting anything!”

For a moment, Cross was silent. In that moment, Kara felt her stomach suddenly drop away as panic threatened to seize her.

What if she had played this wrong? So far, Cross had been a relative gentleman, never making a move that wasn’t reciprocated, but what if he’d had enough? What if he lost his patience, decided that he was going to have sex, whether Kara was an agreeing and willing partner or not? She could handle herself in most fights, but she wasn’t expecting to have to fight to keep from getting raped.

However, after that long minute of indecision, Kara heard, and felt, Cross let out all of his breath in a long whoosh. “Damn you, Agent Sybil,” he said to her, sounding more annoyed than actually upset. “This physically hurts me, you know.”

“Oh, you’ll get over it,” Kara teased, her near-panic washing away as quickly as it had appeared, now replaced with relief.

“I most certainly will,” he whispered back. As he spoke, one hand curled up around Kara’s side, running gently over her, up her spine. Even though she tried to resist, the FBI agent shivered at the pleasurable touch.

“Because I know something more,” Cross whispered in her ear.

Kara squirmed at the hot breath. “What’s that?”

“I know that you can’t fool yourself forever,” he replied, his hand lingering at the small of her back. “You want me, and sooner or later, you’ll come around.”

“Never,” the FBI agent whispered back.

Cross didn’t argue. But, as loud as a shout, she could hear his self-satisfied smile.

Both of them knew that he was right.

For a moment longer, as she fought off sleep, Rogers’ words echoed back to her. “Remember what’s most important,” he had said. “Don’t get in too deep.”

At that point, Kara had been confident that she wasn’t in too deep, that she could handle Cross. That little spark between them had been nothing but a one-time thing, brought on by too much alcohol.

Tonight, however, seemed to tell a different story.

Was she truly in too deep? Was this spark, this undeniable attraction towards this biker, overwhelming her professional control? Should she bail out now? She still had a lead, names, locations, times and dates, information that could be invaluable to the FBI for its investigation.

But she still had the potential to achieve more. Bailing out now would spell the difference between receiving the credit for the case’s closure, or just being an assist on the sidelines.

She wasn’t in too deep. This was deeper than Kara had expected, but she could handle it, could continue treading water.

She had scored a major advance in this case, and the next part of her investigation could blow it wide open, finishing off this gun smuggling ring for good.

She was in deep - but she could handle it, she told herself.

This man lying next to her, the man that she could still taste on her lips, could still feel between her legs - she could handle him.

At least long enough to finish off this case. And then she’d be gone, the problem vanishing into the distance, like all her other previous relationships.

As she fell asleep, she repeated that one line to herself: FBI Special Agent Kara Sybil was still in full control.

By the time she fell asleep, she almost believed it.
