Any Way You Fight It Page 17

by Monique McDonell

"Did that just happen?" Luke asked.

"I think it did." I smiled at him. "Oh my goodness, is that okay with you, to move in there, I didn't even ask you."

"Okay? That's better than okay. I'll be with you and I'll finally have a home. I've always wanted a proper home. I feel like I just won the lottery."

"Worth sleeping in a chair for?"

  "Always."

  Chapter 27

Inside the reception I couldn't wait to find Piper and Lucy and tell them my news. I spotted them across the room and I think they could tell by the euphoric, just been thoroughly kissed look on my face that there was some good news.

"Luke is moving here, to Boston," I said like the giddy schoolgirl I felt like.

And then they joined in jumping up and down.

Luke was right behind me and there was backslapping and handshaking and hugging.

  "And guess what else?"

  "No idea?"

"Nona is giving us her house. You know how much I love that house!"

  "See," said Lucy, "I told you . . ."

"You did. I should have had more faith in you and Nona's visions."

"Oh well, lesson learned for next time, right?"

Luke was standing behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist. He leaned over my shoulder. "Excuse me, there isn't going to be a next time."

  "Sorry," Lucy giggled.

Then our attention was called to the front of the room where Nona was waiting to throw her bouquet. I'd been dreading this moment for days, but now it didn't matter if I caught it; at least there was hope, and if I didn't, well, I didn't need a bouquet to tell me I was going to get my happily ever after.

So I took to the floor with my teenage cousins and some spinster aunts and waited for that bouquet to take to the air, and then I thought how wrong it would be if my seven-year-old niece spent her whole life waiting for a wedding that may never come, and I jumped up and caught that bouquet.

I didn't have to get married to be happy, but I was okay with increasing my odds.

"It looks like I'm going to be a bridesmaid at two weddings in the not too distant future," Piper said as I walked back towards my group.

"You just never know," I said, looking at Luke. Our story had already had so many twists and turns, maybe that would be another.

About the Author – Monique McDonell

I am an Australian author who writes contemporary women’s fiction including chick lit and romance. I live on Sydney’s Northern Beaches with my husband and daughter, and despite my dog phobia, with a dog called Skip.

I have written all my life especially as a child when I loved to write short stories and poetry. At University, I studied Creative Writing as part of my Communication degree. Afterwards I was busy working in public relations and I didn’t write for pleasure for quite a few years although I wrote many media releases, brochures, and newsletters. (And I still do in my day job!)

When I began to write again, I noticed a trend—writing dark unhappy stories made me unhappy. So I made a decision to write a novel with a happy ending, and I have been writing happy stories ever since.

I have been a member of the writing group The Writer’s Dozen for eight years. Our anthology Better Than Chocolate raised over $10,000 for the charity Room to Read and helped build a library in South East Asia. I am also a member of Romance Writers of Australia.

This is the sixth novel I have released in the last two years.
