“Is that a threat?”
“No. Professional courtesy. You’re good and, well, I figure you deserve at least a warning. Now you have it. Thanks for calling.”
The phone clicked without another word. The line was humming as I hung up the receiver.
“That was interesting,” Rosey said.
“Truly.”
“I got the gist of it. Any details I need to know?”
“Someone actually paid Diamond the full price to kill us both.”
“You’re thinking it was not the preacher?”
“Yeah. That’s what I’m thinking.”
“Then who? Marilyn Saunders?”
“Where’d she get that kind of money?”
“Can’t say,” he said.
“Could be someone else, you know.”
“Hold that thought. Our list of enemies seems to be growing.”
“Maybe we should take that Dale Carnegie course.”
“Winning friends and influencing people?” he asked.
“That would be the one. Wonder if they have a section on the use of firearms?”
I poured myself a cup of coffee and returned to my seat by the window to watch the rain some more. It seemed to be raining harder now. I wondered where Marie Jones was and what she was thinking. She never did come out of hiding during the investigation by the Dan River Police. They listed her as a person of interest, but they had no real case, so there was nothing that they really wanted from her other than some information. I had convinced Detective Rosenbaum to let her go since she had nothing significant to contribute to what we did not know. I told him that Robby had confessed enough to me, and Rosenbaum believed me. It was enough of a white lie for me to feel comfortable with it. Robby would have wanted me to help Marie anyway.
I took a sip of coffee and offered a toast.
“May your life be better wherever you are, dear child,” I said softly to myself.
