Walking in the Dark Page 24

by Donna Augustine

After another ten minutes of lying there and tossing, I got up. I went into the living room, hoping that watching TV would dim the recent memories so I could fall back to sleep. Who doesn’t have a TV in their bedroom?

  Someone who doesn’t watch it.

Kane was there, leaning by the window, sweatpants hanging low on his hips. He looked like a living sculpture, and I wasn’t sure anyone real had ever been created so perfectly. Or maybe he wasn’t perfect to anyone but me.

  He glanced over. “What’s wrong?”

I got used to sleeping next to you and now you won’t come to bed, damn it. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to be that blunt. Way too fast. “Nothing. Just wanted to watch a little TV.”

I walked around to settle on the couch, grabbing the remote.

“Nice renovations you did while I was gone.”

“You’re welcome.” The dwarves had done a nice job fixing up the Underground.

“Do I want to know what the place looked like before?”

I shook my head. “Probably not.”

He nodded. “I heard there’s a vampire that went missing.”

I shrugged. She’d had it coming. “Bad things happen when you treat people like they’re Slurpees from 7-Eleven.”

He sat on the corner of the couch beside me. “Put that other show on. The one with the guy in a kilt and some chick who went back in time.”

My head swung to him. “Outlander? You want to watch Outlander?”

“Yeah, what’s so funny about that?” He was smiling, as if he knew exactly why I thought it was funny.

I clicked on demand and hit play while he was stretching out. I put the remote down, and before I could lean back, he looped an arm around my waist and tugged me down beside him. He shifted and then was behind me, spooning me.

I felt ready to drift back to sleep, and another piece fell into place. “Do you snuggle with me when I’m sleeping?”

“It might have happened on occasion.”

No wonder I couldn’t sleep without him anymore. He’d been secretly cuddling with me for weeks. I hadn’t woken up once. I didn’t need to ponder why. I knew. Even in my sleep, I’d known it had felt right.
