  CHAPTER ONE

“Phyllis, I just can’t do it this weekend.” I held the phone between my shoulder and ear, the way we all do when we’re not really listening. I checked my latest article for spelling mistakes while my boss sighed into my ear.

“Find a way, Cass.” Phyllis sighed again. I could just imagine her rolling her eyes. To her, weekends weren’t really a thing. She just worked through them and didn’t understand that some of her employees didn’t want to churn out articles on Saturday nights. “$2000 for the article, on top of your normal salary. Consider it an early Christmas bonus.”

“That’s tempting, but it’s Friday afternoon, and I’m already home,” I said, thinking about my date with season four of “The Walking Dead” and a pint of mint chocolate chip. I sighed myself, echoing Phyllis’s dismay. I wasn’t one to work on weekends, even when it involved a ridiculous sum of money for a two thousand word fluff piece on a local entrepreneur. “And I have a date with Daryl Dixon, Phil.” She laughed.

“I hear that this guy is hot, Cassandra. And loaded. I’ve also heard rumors that he’s a shifter.” Phyllis giggled. Even though shifters were out since early 2010, I’d never met one in person. Because of the laws put in place to protect their identity, you usually didn’t know if you’d met a shifter unless he or she actually shifted before your eyes.

“Really?” A sexy businessman … and a potential shifter. “What is he? A bear? A lion?” I’d even heard talk of a tiger shifter in the area, but nothing was verified.

“I’m heard that he’s a wolf. I’ve even heard that he’s a very important wolf. I think it would be pretty interesting if you got some tidbits on his company, and maybe you’ll see something while you’re there that tells you about his extracurricular activities.”

“Well, Phil, we couldn’t publish anything about that. That’s really not fair to his privacy. You can’t send me looking for that kind of thing …” Phyllis cut me off before I started to get really ramped up on my tirade. Privacy issues were huge in the shifter community because non-shifters wanted to know about them so badly.

“Stop, Cass. That’s not what I’m asking. People are hungry for shifter stories, but that’s not what this piece is. Beauregard’s startup just went public and the people want to hear more about him and what he’s doing with social media apps. One of the apps is shifter-related, so that’s probably where the rumors are from.” Phyllis knew she had me on board. I couldn’t resist a good story, and this was a legitimate way to get to know more about a very private set of people.

“Fine, Phil. You owe me a vacation though. I’ll go see this guy on Saturday and get the scoop on his company, and I’ll have the piece to you by Wednesday next week, alright?”

“Good, good,” Phyllis said. “I hear he’s a little reticent when you first meet him, probably because of the rumors.”

“Sure, whatever.” I shook off her comment on Curtis Beauregard. I had heard about him before, even though I hadn’t heard about the possibility of his being a shifter. I knew I could get some quotes to make the article good enough, and I wouldn’t be prying into any of his personal behaviors. After all, it wasn’t like I was telling his life story. I was just getting a little bit of info on his company, and a few cheery quotes about the rise of small tech businesses. That kind of thing was good for the winter, stimulating the economy, making people positive for the new year and all that. “I got it, Phyllis. I’ll set something up with his secretary before I leave today.”

I hung up the phone and let out a groan. I’d been so looking forward to staying home on Saturday and just keeping to myself. But that wasn’t going to happen, and who was I kidding, it hadn’t happened in quite a long time. At least I’d be spending part of my weekend with a handsome man. That was something that I hadn’t come close to in over a year. I bet there were cobwebs growing down there — my womanhood had taken second place to my career in journalism. Men sometimes looked, especially those who liked a curvier woman with ample hips and a taste for ice cream, but I didn’t have enough confidence to respond to them. And a lot of those guys weren’t particularly winning in personality or in looks. So for now, I was biding my time. It would happen sometime, on one of these Saturdays when I didn’t have to work. I’d sign up for Match and go on a few dates with some local hipsters, maybe even get my curvy ass laid. For now though, I was stuck with Beauregard for the day. I’d probably be holed up in some office with him while he looked at me with mild contempt or simple blankness, and I’d keep chatting with him inanely until he accidentally spewed out some quotes good enough for the article. That would be Saturday. “Walking Dead” could wait until Sunday, I supposed. I shot off an email to his personal assistant, hoping for an appointment at a decent time. I got up from my sofa, stretching and wondering why I’d taken a job that never had any days off. I walked to my shower, figuring I’d better have hair fixed for this billionaire guy. Otherwise, I might not get any usable quotes at all. If he saw the snarl of my curly auburn locks, he might be too distracted by my appearance to say anything intelligible. I’d been working at home for the past few days and had neglected showering — sometimes that could be a bad situation for creating good first impressions.

I passed by my mirror and caught a glimpse of myself. I was a rough-looking sight in my traditional work uniform — sweatpants and an old college t-shirt, but I could see the promise of my curves through the clothes. I had large breasts that seemed to always get in my own way … but they always attracted glimpses from men. I tried to hide them from people with my clothes, feeling too much, too curvy, too out there. Maybe that’s why I hadn’t gotten a date. I patted my round rump as I looked at myself. Now, my ass was just fine. Maybe someday I’d learn to love all of me. For now though, I was just going to shower and hope to hear from the Beauregard’s secretary in time to figure out my plan for the next day. I sighed and stripped down for the shower, something in me a bit nervous about my impending interview with a supposedly very handsome, very rich, very mysterious man who was possibly also a wolf. I’d seen a picture of him the last time the local newspaper ran a piece on his company. He’d looked handsome, for sure — dark hair, tall and well built, but something about his face seemed strange. Maybe that was the extra DNA that allowed him to shift. Maybe I’d already seen it in his face. I was still thinking about the prospect of meeting him when I stepped out of the shower.

Odd, I thought, How odd that suddenly I should feel so
strange about an ordinary assignment. I wrapped one towel around my unruly hair. Even though I’d conditioned it thoroughly, taming it eluded me. I wrapped another towel around my body and went to sit back down at my computer. I hoped there would be an email telling me when and where I could meet this man. For some reason, I was even anxious about the next day. It had been a while since I’d interviewed a powerful man, let alone a very rich and handsome one. I gulped and opened my email.

Thank you for writing Lupus Corporation. Please come the foyer of Mr. Beauregard’s abode by 5:00PM tomorrow, and be prepared to stay for one hour. I will meet you at the foyer and can show you to Mr. Beauregard’s office. Be prepared for Mr. Beauregard to be quite tight-lipped about the progress his company is making. Though he knows that publicity can be beneficial for his company at this point, he may not give the kind of information you’re looking for. I’m sure you’ll be able to get one or two quotes.

Karen Wood, secretary and personal assistant to Curtis Beauregard.

So, I’d be going to out to meet him in the afternoon. I’d have time to get myself together and maybe even relax before I went. Well, I’d go and meet him and figure out what to write along the way. I felt my anxiety rise again, churning in my stomach. I’d be seeing this mysterious man tomorrow, and I hadn’t even been alone with a handsome man in … months? Maybe years. I saw plenty of men at my job, but they certainly weren’t what I would call handsome. And my last date — six months ago now — certainly wasn’t with a handsome guy. Poor Henrik. He resembled a potato with glasses. I felt something else leap inside of my body. My nervous system activated, buzzing with the anticipation of meeting Mr. Beauregard. I even felt a tingling building between my legs, my unused sex becoming slick just thinking of meeting a man who may or may not change into a strong, sleek, powerful animal.

Down girl, I thought. Just because you’re meeting him doesn’t mean you’re going to be hopping in bed with him. I shifted in my chair, uncomfortably nude under my towel. I got up and walked to my bedroom, looking out of my window to catch a glimpse of the setting sun. The city was so beautiful this time of year, and it occurred to me that it would be even better if I had someone to share it with. I sighed and dropped one towel and then the other, shaking my hair out.

Almost inadvertently, I raised my hands to my breasts and looked down at them. Round, full, and warm. I ran my fingers over my nipples, letting them get hard and warm in my hands. My sex began to respond, growing even wetter. I very rarely pleasured myself these days, but something in me had started to feel awake, perhaps just because of the mention of a handsome man. I sighed and let myself give into my desire. I felt the beginning of excitement starting to form. I circled my rosy nipples with my fingers, sending sweet shocks from my breasts down to the nerves in my pussy. Goosebumps rose on my skin, and I thought of the man I hadn’t even met yet, the man who could shift and change his body at will. And what would that mean for a woman who was with him? Would he know even more about the human body than another man? Arousal coursed through my body, my pussy beginning to thrum with excitement. I thought of the shifter knowing my body, and I lay back on my bed and lifted up my legs so that I could touch myself. I lowered my fingers to my soft mound, feeling the wetness there and moving my fingers inside. I rubbed small circles around my clit, bringing my body back to live after months of neglect. I moaned thinking of that handsome, unknown man taking me for his own. I thought of his thick, hard cock entering me, and I caressed the silken folds of my sex, feeling the tension and excitement rise inside of my body, shivers running up and down my spine. I slipped a finger, and then two, inside. My climax began to rise, cresting like a great wave taking over my body. The electric shocks of pleasure started to move through my body. I thrust my fingers inside again, adding a third and imagining the shifter’s cock inside of me as I met my orgasm. I raised off of the bed and groaned, taking my other hand to my clit as I fingered myself. The ripples of pleasure rolled through my body, and I shuddered at the sweet release. As the orgasm receded, I realized that this was something I’d been missing. Even if the man I would meet tomorrow was nothing like I’d just imagined, he’d already given me the gift of a precious, personal pleasure. I smiled to myself and rolled over in bed, reaching for my book. I’d enjoy my non-working hours while I could.

I fell asleep reading my book, still naked, and still thinking about the mysterious shifter.

  CHAPTER TWO

When I arrived at Curtis Beauregard’s estate, I thought of him as he had appeared in my fantasy the previous evening. He was tall and strong, and I had almost felt his body as I touched myself, thinking of his presence. In my vision, he’d been gentle, yet powerful. I’d imagined that I sensed his wolfish nature as he entered me, and I’d thought of him letting out a throaty growl as he came deep inside of me.

Enough, I told myself as I parked the car. You just like the concept of this guy, Cass. Now let’s go get the scoop on the actual, real guy. I got out of my car and walked up to the front door, brushing off the green dress I’d chosen to wear. It accented my hair nicely, and had a touch of sexiness to it. The place was absolutely palatial. Phyllis had told me that all of his staff lived here with him, and that there was a personal chef for them on site. This place actually acted as a series of apartments for the employees of the company, so it made sense that it was huge. It looked like six or seven houses built together, with glass walkways and several outside entertainment areas. I couldn’t explain why I felt timid, but something was strange about the whole place. It did seem a bit … otherworldly. If this guy was in fact a shifter, then maybe that explained some of it. After all, shifters weren’t entirely human. I shuddered at the mystery of the man I was about to meet — and truthfully, I was still feeling excited.

Before I even walked up the stairs to the front entrance of the state, the woman I assumed was Beauregard’s secretary opened the door.

“You must be Cassandra Luna.” She smiled at me, her teeth showing in a bright, somewhat intimidating grin. “I’m Sheila, Mr. Beauregard’s assistant. Please, come in.” She held out her hand and shook mine firmly, guiding me into the large set of buildings that held the reticent billionaire’s estate and his business. Sheila was taller than me by three or four inches, and she had a confident presence that I couldn’t quite get a read on. Certainly, she was beautiful. She had a regal air about her, and she had gorgeous hazel eyes that flashed almost gold when she looked at me. She also had a thick, flowing mane of dark golden hair. If she wasn’t a shifter, I’d certainly eat my hat. I’d heard that there were different physical attributes that humans could sometimes pick up on in shifters, and this certainly seemed like a case where that was true. I smiled politely at Sheila, trying not to feel intimidated by her presence. I wondered if she shifted into a golden wolf to match her hair.

Sheila led me down the hall to Mr. Beauregard’s office. The hallways in his estate were rustic, lined with real wood paneling, the knots and wood grain showing through in a classy way.

“This is Mr. Beauregard’s office here on the right. He said for me to bring you here when you got in.” She opened the door to the office and let me in. And there was Curtis Beauregard, sitting behind the desk, staring intently at his computer. He stood up to greet me and took my hand. His touch almost felt like an electric shock going through me. The man was handsome — that was for sure. But it was more than that. His eyes flashed hazel-gold, even brighter than Sheila’s eyes. And his hair was thick and chestnut, styled perfectly around his ears. His face was chiseled and his presence was even more intimidating than that of Sheila’s, but when he smiled, he looked kind and friendly. I couldn’t help smiling back as he held my hand.

“If you want to have a seat, Ms. Luna, you can sit here so that we can have a little chat.” I sat down on one of the chairs facing his desk. The office was dark, and the furniture was very large and plush. Even one of the chairs I was sitting in could have held two people. His office gave off an air of being expensive,
for sure, but it was also comfortable. And it held that same air of rustic taste that the rest of his state portrayed.

“I’ll leave now, Alpha, unless you need anything else,” Sheila said. I might have imagined it, but it seemed like she nodded slightly to Curtis, perhaps in a gesture of respect. He couldn’t be the Alpha of his pack, could he? I felt my stomach doing flips again. Alphas were the leaders of their communities, and they were even more private than your average shifter since they weren’t recognized by the government.

“So, Ms. Luna,” he said, dismissing Sheila with a wave of his hand, “I hear you’re from The Daily Chronicle, and I suppose you’d like to do an article on my business. It is blooming into something quite spectacular, and we’ve just gone public with our stock offerings.” He brushed his suit off and sat down again, his smile starting to look plastered to his face, forced.

“Well, yes, Mr. Beauregard. I’m working on a piece about the rise of local tech businesses, and you’re at the top of the game.” I smiled. This was going well so far.

  “Please, call me Curtis.”

“Curtis, thank you. I was hoping to work with you for an hour or so and learn more about your company. I hear you run a rigorous schedule around here.” I felt his eyes glancing over my body, taking in my curves. I felt a shiver run up my spine again.

“Or are you like the other reporters who’ve come here in search of information about my pack?” My heart started beating faster — and Curtis’s smile had quickly disappeared. “You do know, don’t you? Even though the shapeshifter does its best to keep out of the public eye, someone has been talking about me and my team of workers here. I’ve had lots of folks coming around trying to sniff out us wolves, if you’ll pardon my pun.”
