by Rachel Federman

Rachel insists on irritating people by never settling into a full-time job with predictable hours and instead always works part time at various endeavors, including designing programs in minority education for nonprofit organizations, which she’s been doing with her father for the past decade. Together, they’ve written grants and conducted evaluations for over 100 social-justice projects, including disease prevention in West Africa, sustainable development in Nepal, promoting social cohesion in America, and developing creative employment opportunities for U.S. veterans. Her books include Kiss in the Dark (Random House), Test Your Dog (Sterling), and Jiggle Shots (Abrams). Rachel currently lives in Manhattan, where she tries to balance a freelance writing career with caring for her four-year-old and serving as an advocate for simple, natural childhoods, sustainable living, and community revitalization. In her blog, Last American Childhood, Rachel writes about the New York hyper-parenting scene and her attempts to resist the forces of commercialism that undermine children’s imaginations and their appreciation of the natural world.
