Ransom

“That’s not mine!” she argues.
“Isn’t that what everyone says?” I make a big show out of holding it in my hand, turning it over and inspecting it. “It’s got some writing on a piece of paper inside. If this isn’t yours, like you say, then maybe you can help us with whose it is.”
Huffing loudly, she grabs the bag from my hand. “This is so stupid. I hope you know I’m never swallowing for you again, in fact you’ll be lucky if I go home with you after this.”
I bite my lip to keep from laughing.
She turns it over in her hands. “Wait, this is your handwriting.” She looks at me, with a whole bunch of confusion. Pushing her hair back from her face, she turns the baggie over again.
Her shoulders shake and tears immediately start running down her face.
“Wanna read it?” I ask softly.
“Stella,” she bites her bottom lip to keep it from trembling, rubbing her nose with her palm, “will you marry me?”
When she looks at me again, I’m down on one knee, holding a ring out to her. My voice quivers as I say all the words that have been longing to get out since I came up with this plan. “I love you more than I ever thought I could love anyone. You accept my unpredictable work hours, my dinners at two a.m., a dog that sometimes doesn’t allow us to spend time alone together, and every part of me that I’ve ever been scared to show the rest of the world. More than that, you love me, you love my dog, and our life together is everything I ever imagined my life to be. Will you?”
She nods up and down, those blue eyes of hers bright with tears. “Yes! Yes! I’ll marry you.”
Before I can even get up, she launches herself at me, and I barely catch her. Our lips meet in the sweetest of kisses she and I have ever experienced. In a way, it’s a metaphor for how our lives have been since we got together. Her always taking those chances, and me following behind her, making sure she doesn’t fall. I’m happy in that role, in fact I’m sure I was born to play it – for her.
Clapping and hollering come from all around us as we break our kiss apart. The rest of our families – who were in another SUV not far from here – arrived just as I was making my case. We’re being scooped up and hugged by everyone, congratulations are being given, even Rambo is barking his happiness. Our eyes meet across the way. Those are the eyes I search for in every room, the body I want to lay next to me every night, and the woman I want raising my children.
In the middle of a crazy life – somehow she and I got the fuckin’ fairytale – and damned if it didn’t turn out just how it was always meant to.
