Meg got up from the sofa. “I’ll tell you what, I’ll go grab the donuts and come back.”
Connor nodded. “All right. That sounds good to me.”
“How many do you want?” Meg asked.
“One is fine.”
“Look at you, showing an admirable amount of restraint,” Meg said. “Even in the face of insane stress.”
“Don’t get me wrong. I could easily eat three or four donuts, but I’m not sure if that’s the best idea.”
Meg grinned. “You’d be surprised.”
Connor squinted. “I’m confused. What am I missing?”
“Honey, I have a surprise for you.”
Connor became sheepish. “What kind of surprise?”
“Don’t worry. You’re going to love this one.”
“Are you sure about that?”
“Yes,” Meg said.
“In that case, fire away.”
Meg took a deep breath and then replied, “The donuts that we serve at my family’s bakery are magical.”
“Seriously?”
Meg nodded. “In fact, with the magical ingredients that we use, you could eat three or four donuts a day from our bakery and never gain a single pound.”
“That’s crazy.”
“What a great surprise, huh?”
“I’ll say,” Connor replied. “I wish I would have known that before.”
“Well, you know the truth now.”
“In that case, bring me four donuts,” Connor said.
“Will do,” Meg said. “One magical breakfast, coming up.”
