“Chill,” Eric chuckled. “We might stop to get her something to eat.”
“Make it quick. She likes her burgers without mayo and onion. She loves pink lemonade. Get it for her and go if she requires it.”
“She’ll be fine, man. She’ll have me and Damien with her. No other student here has ever had a Conexus escort.”
“I know she’s in good hands, but that girl…” my voice trailed off.
“She’ll be fine. I promise. I’d die before I let anything happen to her. So would Damien.”
“I know.” I swallowed hard.
“Why don’t you come with us?” Eric asked.
“I can’t. I need to stay away from her until she gets adjusted here. I need to maintain my distance. I’m not good for her.”
“What are you talking about? You’re the Reever. You’re exactly what she needs.”
“I’m not. We’re toxic together. We push and pull one another. I need to stay away until things are better sorted.”
“What about your rounds to all the new students? Are you going to skip her on your visits?” Eric frowned at me.
“No.” I shook my head. “It’ll just be really awkward.” I went to my desk and yanked a paper out and handed it to him. “You’ve been assigned as her trainer.”
“Man.” He sighed and shook his head at me as he took the paper. “Why? We’re really doing this?”
“Yes. I trust you with her,” I said softly. “You’ll do right by her. She needs someone she can trust. You’re that guy. You can teach her. I know you can.”
“Why don’t you? Why are you doing this to yourself? To her?”
“I’m just trying to protect her.” My lips twitched, torn between tipping up and turning down. “It’s best if I go on as if I hate her. I’ll only ruin everything if I get involved directly with her.”
“You do realize you’re making a huge mistake here, right?” Eric asked, studying me.
“I know.” I nodded. “But she’ll have you. So, it’ll be OK.”
“I’ll take care of her,” he said fiercely.
“I don’t have any doubts,” I replied honestly. “Now go get my mancer. Oh, and let everyone know not to call me Shadow anymore.”
“What do you want us to call you then?” Eric frowned at me as he waited for me to speak. I smiled.
“Tell them to call me by my real name. Tell them to call me Raiden.”

Acknowledgments
Huge thanks to my editor and friend Charlotte. Without her amazing organizational skills, Shadow may have been lost to the void. To K.B. Andrews, you make every Wednesday that much better (and every day is Wednesday in our world!). Giant thanks to Christian, the best cover designer in all of cover designer land! He knew exactly what I wanted before I did.
And you! Thank you for reading my words. I love fan interaction. Please don’t hesitate to message me on social media. I’d love to hear from you!
Oh. One last thing. Thank you to my own Shadow. Without his constant arrival in the night, maybe all those things that rattle my closet doors and shake my bed really would have nabbed me.
