BLACKOUT: CROSSBREED SERIES BOOK 5 Page 35

  Epilogue

Christian tossed the last receipt into the flames. The fire devoured the paper, disintegrating it into ash. He should have burned them weeks ago, but no one ever came into his room. Like almost everyone else, he’d leave his laundry outside the door for Kira, so he was the only person who ever crossed that threshold.

Maybe part of him wanted to get caught.

Or maybe he was just getting careless. It was arrogant of him to believe that Raven would forgive his deception. He knew what he’d done was wrong. Crush wasn’t a stranger to their world, so there wasn’t a need to keep it from Raven.

It had been difficult for him to do this recent assignment while constantly worried about Raven’s whereabouts and safety. But what confused him the most was how reckless she was getting about their on-again, off-again relationship. Was she trying to get them kicked out or just hoping to drive him away? They couldn’t afford to be careless. Christian had a feeling that Viktor would send them both away, and if that happened, neither of them would remember each other. There was always a chance they could work out a deal with him, but Viktor would have to be convinced that what they had was permanent. Casual got dangerous, but nothing about this felt casual.

He strolled across the room and sat on the edge of his bed. Turning the onyx ring around his finger, he couldn’t help but wonder how her restored memories would change things. She’d only had a short time to process everything, and the way she’d tackled him gave him unexpected reservations. Christian wasn’t ready to go public, especially without knowing if what they had was true.

And the odds of that weighed heavily on his mind. He had experienced firsthand how easily women trampled on the hearts of men. They were just as conniving as their male counterparts. He felt like two halves of a whole—the cynical side constantly warring with the other side that wanted to believe true love was possible for a lost cause like him.

He clenched his fists when he thought of that shitebag returning her necklace like some kind of hero. Part of the deal was restoring her stolen memories, not the gemstone. Houdini had to have known the value of that necklace. No man in his right mind would give away a priceless find such as that. So why throw it back in Christian’s face?

Because he knew it would put him in a good light.

Houdini worked all angles, and Christian was beginning to dread what might be in store for him. Raven’s memories had come at a price, and he pondered over what that price might be.

Footfalls in the outside hall drew him out of his thoughts, and when he cocked his head to the side, they ceased.

A light knock sounded at his chamber door.

He’d known she wouldn’t be vexed for long. Raven wasn’t the kind of woman who flounced off and held a grudge. She preferred looking a person right in the eye and telling it like it was.

Keeping secrets about her father was reprehensible, but he knew she’d eventually come to her senses and see it had been a necessary evil.

He rounded the bed, straightening his shoulders and masking the grin on his face as he opened the door… and peered into darkness. Christian heard a familiar ticking that he hadn’t heard in many years.

  Was he dreaming?

It was a rhythm without a tune, and when a ghost from his past stepped into view, Christian drew back.

  “Lenore?”

A smile widened her unmerciful red lips. “Christian Poe. So, we meet again.”
