Mayhem’s King: Operation Mayhem Page 17

"Quantum, you shouldn't be out of bed." Alarmed, she rushed to him, threading her arm through his.

"Needed to see him,” Quantum said in the gravelly thick voice.

"Did you walk down here by yourself?" He’d only started to become physically active a couple of months ago. After so long in that coma, he shouldn’t be able to manage such a feat so soon. He also shouldn’t have been able to leave his room undetected. She’d had the team place a sensor on his door to alert her whenever he tried to leave. She wasn’t willing to risk him falling or suffering from another mental break without her there to save him.

He glanced down at her, his face unreadable. "I'm not a baby."

She forced a chuckle, even as the tension coiled tight inside her. Of course he wasn't a baby, he was a foot taller than her, and he was strong. Stronger than even he realized. But he was also so fragile. "Obviously not."

His gaze left her then, moving over her shoulder to stare at the same man she'd been watching all morning. "How is he?"

Without waiting for her to answer, Quantum slowly limped over to the glass, standing where she stood only a minute before.

Unreadable. Scary. Beautiful. "He's stable now. I ran some tests, still waiting for the results."

If the levels of serum matched Quantum's, she should at least have a good starting point. Quantum had been overdosed in the labs, the physical structure is DNA altered because of it. While the rest of the team needed the serum injections weekly to survive, they hadn’t had quite as much cellular damage as Quantum.

Dawson slowly rose to his feet and her breath caught. He stalked across the small cell, coming to stand directly in front of Quantum. The two men's gazes caught and held, the air practically crackled.

"Quantum?" He didn't acknowledge she'd spoken. Instead, he put one, large palm against the glass. As if caught in some kind of slow-motion replay, Dawson did the same. The hairs on Melissa's neck stood on end.

"Quantum, what is it?" She asked hesitantly.

He stared straight ahead, unmoving. And then he answered her in a voice so low she had to lean into here it. "He's like me."

She grabbed Quantum's thick forearm, her pulse fluttering. "What do you mean?"

She felt Dawson's attention turn to her and her heart pounded. For some reason, she was afraid to look at him. Trying to shake off the strange anxiety, she forced herself to face him, but couldn't make herself let go of Quantum.

Dawson's icy blue eyes ensnared her. Only they weren’t icy, they were burning bright. A sudden rush of warmth flooded her. Every single molecule in her body strained towards him. A whole different level of awareness bridged between them. She could sense him inside of her mind, surrounding her body.

Her fear disappeared. Captivated, she lifted her hand to the glass once more. Dawson placed his own right in front of hers. A flash of heat shot through her palm up her arm. She felt like she’d just stepped into the brightest sunlight. A low burning hazy heat flushed her cheeks and made her heart rate double.

Quantum slid his hand over hers still on his arm. And like a circuit that had just been completed, the current of energy circled through them. She could feel them both. Feel the tangled mess and uncertainty rolling around in Quantum's head. But overriding that was the focused intensity in Dawson. A focus that was directed at her. And the feeling she got from Dawson was entirely, earth changing different.

  It was possession.

  It was protection.

  It was need.
