The Ranger Page 4

  One thousand credits.

  ‘Enough for rent.’

  ‘And a drink?’

‘Easy now. Don’t want to blow a circuit.’

‘Or your stitches. At this rate, we won’t earn enough to patch up a broken leg.’

  Carter nodded silently.

There was a blast of movement in the water below. Ripples cascaded out. Carter leaned over the harbour to see but whatever it was, whatever fish just scored food had dragged its prey below the wallowing turmoil of the harbour waters.

He moved to the car and slumped into the seat.

‘I’ll drive?’ Otis asked through the window.

Carter didn’t say anything and Otis stubbed out the rest of his fag, swung into the driver’s seat and started the car with a press of a button. The car thrived from a fuel cell hidden under the sloped bonnet and worked in total silence.

Otis turned onto the highway and aimed for the cluttered skyline of the city centre and most importantly, away from Los Milos. ‘Home?’

‘Mm.’ Carter mumbled and turned the bleak paycheck around between his fingers. ‘I hate this district.’
