The horses were calm while Riley and Coop saddled them and tied down their gear. Riley spoke softly to them, giving the horses a chance to get reacquainted with her. They’d be family on the long journey ahead and had to learn to trust and rely on each other.

When they finished in the stables, they led the horses to the hiding place near the gate to retrieve the rest of their belongings. With the supplies packed, they mounted and rode the horses down the gravel drive. Cheerful sounds from their wedding reception floated on the breeze. Riley turned, resisting the urge to gallop back to the house and give Julia one last hug.

Coop reined his horse to a stop next to her. “I know you’re torn, but we either we go now or wait at the fishing lodge until morning.”

In answer, Riley, filled with fear and determination, snapped the reins to get her horse trotting away from the ranch. They faced months of travel on dangerous roads masked in shadow. With the hope of reuniting her family as her driving force, she sat taller in the saddle and turned her face to the west.
