I stepped forward and ran the blade down the length of the heel of my right hand. Sorrow must have numbed me for I barely felt the knife as it opened my skin. A tiny line of red opened into a steady dripping of blood. It all was a terribly familiar feeling.
I held my hand over the grave and squeezed my hand into a fist, allowing a few drops to splatter on the wooden coffin below. When I stepped back, Missy was waiting with a blue handkerchief in hand. She wrapped it around my hand tightly and laced her fingers with mine to keep the bandage on. Her face looked so distraught.
“What’d you go and do that for?”
“I didn’t much feel like cryin’.”
