“Grandma, when is mommy going to sing?”
“When the warmup band is done, sweetie.” Gregg’s mom kissed the top of his daughter’s head.
Sitting in his mother’s lap, Riley turned around and cupped her cheek. “How much longer?”
“Not long.”
“Daddy?”
“Yes, sweetheart.”
“I’m tired.”
“Do you want to sit on me?”
“Yes, please.”
Gregg lifted his little girl off his mother’s lap and cradled her in his arms. “Close your eyes. I’ll wake you up when mommy goes on.”
“Okay.”
As he held her close, her soft hair tickling his chin, Gregg’s heart swelled with love. The past five years had been the happiest of his life, and he was looking forward to many more.
“I’m so excited for Alicia,” his mother said. “This is the biggest crowd she’s ever performed for. “I’m proud of her. It isn’t easy balancing motherhood with a singing career.” She patted his arm. “You are a good husband, Gregg. She couldn’t have done it without you.”
“And you.” He leaned and kissed his mother’s cheek. “If you didn’t volunteer to babysit Riley every time we needed it, it would have been much more difficult for us.”
She waved a dismissive hand. “Riley is the joy of my life. You couldn’t keep me away even if you wanted to.”
Thinking back to his unfounded fears about his mother not accepting Alicia, Gregg shook his head. He hadn’t given his mother enough credit. She’d hated the tattoos, but she’d fallen in love with Alicia.
Life was good and getting even better.
His mother didn’t know it yet, but in seven months, their little family was going to welcome another bundle of joy.
