Mob Lawyer 5: A Legal Thriller Page 27

“Maybe not the best idea to patronize a man with a gun, Monroe,” Hisashi said without looking back at us.

The bald agent stood in the middle of my living room with his hands in his pockets and a relaxed stance like he visited every day. His eyes were glued to the TV, and he shook his head as the reporter replayed the video of the machine guns that had been found in Galic’s office.

“It seems that you already know who ordered the hit on you,” the older man said as he turned his attention to my client.

“I appreciate you arresting him for me,” Anthony said as he holstered his own Glock.

  “I’m sure,” Monroe said.

“It is comforting to know that my client and his family are no longer at risk from the Serbian mob’s attacks,” I said as I narrowed my eyes at the younger agent.

“But he won’t be able to give him cement shoes,” the cocky fed said with a smirk.

“I’ve never been particularly interested in footwear,” the younger Febbo said. “As long as the criminals are behind bars, that’s all that matters.”

“Not all of them are,” the tall fed said.

“Monroe,” Hisashi growled. “Mr. Morgan, Mr. Febbo, I wanted to thank you personally for all of the information that your friend helped us to gather. It would’ve taken us years to prove how deep the corruption went. And now, you won’t have to worry about any other attacks on your family. I haven’t been able to prove it yet, but I suspect that Galic had a hand in your father’s attempted murder.”

“I wouldn’t doubt it,” I said. “It would be nice to be able to charge him with it, though.”

“Well,” the bald agent said. “If your friend comes up with anything that can be used in court, then I’d be happy to review it.”

I strolled into the kitchen to pull down a few glasses.

“Does anyone want some water?” I offered.

“The cannolis are almost done,” Tom said.

“Perfect,” I grinned. “We don’t want to keep you two for any longer than necessary.”

Monroe narrowed his eyes and pulled back his shoulders like he was about to argue with me, but his partner just nodded his head and smiled.

“We do have quite a few arrests to review,” Hisashi said. “The RICO case revealed dozens of names. I’m sure you’ve already heard a few of them, and of course, you saw the mayor and the chief, but there were several officers involved, as well. You remember Officer Nelson?”

  “Vaguely,” I answered.

“Well,” the bald man said. “It seems that he’s been on the payroll for years. He’ll be in interrogation in the next half hour, and I don’t want to leave him there for too long.”

“Just long enough to get him all pissed off,” I said. “So that he can say something stupid?”

“Exactly,” the fed grinned. “You do know all of our tricks. I suspect that’s why all of your clients ask for a lawyer the moment that they see handcuffs.”

“I do try to give good counsel,” I responded.

Tommaso had finished with the cannolis and put a few of them in a Tupperware container for the two men. He handed it to them with a tight smile, and I clapped my hands together as I prepared to lead them out of my house.

“I appreciate that you came to tell us in person about the RICO arrests,” I said. “But, I don’t want to keep you gentleman for too long. After all, Nelson may have a good lawyer, too.”

I doubted it since his boss was currently in jail, but I didn’t like the feds being inside my home one second longer than they had to be. I knew that they didn’t have enough evidence to plant a listening device, but I wouldn’t put it past Monroe to try some cowboy bullshit. I made a mental note to have Gabrielle come over and sweep the house for bugs as soon as they were gone.

  “Thank you,” Hisashi said.

I led the two men out, shut the door, and then made the call to Gabrielle before I made my way back into the living room. I nodded at Anthony as he watched the news, and then glanced around for anything that might be out of place.

I’d helped the FBI agents to close the case against the Serbians and the corrupt politicians of New York City. That would keep the feds busy for a while, but at some point, Hisashi, his annoying partner, and the rest of the FBI would turn their focus back to the Febbos.

And I would be there, ready to protect my client.
