Ancient Protector

Moments after they landed, Lachlan shifted back to his human form and suddenly Cody was there with clothing, his demeanor respectful and serious. No longer was he the teasing younger brother as he handed Lachlan a kilt, sporran and other articles of clothing. He was a clansman giving his laird the respect he was due.
Her mate dressed quickly, with the efficiency of a male who’d done this many times before. A warrior returning home.
Star pulled her wings in and ordered her fire to die down as well. On the plane ride, Kartini had braided Star’s hair in an intricate crown “fitting for a queen,” and Star had opted to wear loose black pants and a flowy black top that had been created to fit with her wings in mind. Staring out at everyone, she was overwhelmed at all the curious faces in front of them, watching as if they were waiting for something.
Suddenly a female strode up to her, a genuine, if curious smile on her face as she bowed and handed Star a sash with Lachlan’s clan colors on it. “My lady,” she murmured.
The “lady” took Star off guard for a moment, but Lachlan simply thanked the female and placed the sash over Star’s head and wrapped it around her shoulders before kissing her soundly for all to see.
A cheer went up around them as he deepened it, making her laugh against his mouth. Maybe that was all they’d been waiting for.
“Is it true that you don’t wear anything under your kilt?” she murmured as they parted lips. She hadn’t been paying attention to him getting dressed, she’d been too distracted by the clan and the gorgeous backdrop of the castle.
His grin was pure wicked. “You’ll just have to find out, love.”
Oh, she planned to. As soon as they were alone, she was going to have her wicked way with this male over and over. Hopefully on top of his pile of treasure.
Before she could respond, they were greeted by his clanmates, the males and females hugging her as if they’d known her their entire lives, completely welcoming her, this stranger, into their family as a long-lost friend.
In that moment she knew her fears had been for nothing—this was her home, and her place was with Lachlan.
As long as she had him, everything else would work itself out.

Acknowledgments
First off, I owe a big thanks to Claire Robinson, Erin McRae, and Toni & Gary Anderson for reading over my Scottish phrases. Any and all mistakes are my own. I’m also incredibly thankful to Kaylea Cross who helped me plot out this book during our yearly plotting getaway and who has listened to me brainstorm random ideas for my Ancients Rising series for ages. I’m also grateful for such a thorough editor, Julia Ganis, who helps me keep everything on track. For Sarah, thank you for beta reading and all the other behind the scenes stuff that you do! Jaycee, once again, I love this cover AND the whole concept for the series of covers. For my readers, who wanted more after the Darkness series, this is definitely for you guys! Thank you for all the encouraging emails and messages.
About the Author
Katie Reus is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Red Stone Security series, the Deadly Ops series and the Redemption Harbor series. She fell in love with romance at a young age thanks to books she pilfered from her mom’s stash. Years later she loves reading romance almost as much as she loves writing it.
However, she didn’t always know she wanted to be a writer. After changing majors many times, she finally graduated summa cum laude with a degree in psychology. Not long after that she discovered a new love. Writing. She now spends her days writing dark paranormal romance and sexy romantic suspense.
