Everything around her melted. It was only her, and flames, and the black hole about to swallow her whole. And then, suddenly, she wasn't alone.
Daniel held her hand. He held her. He rocked her in his arms as she cried.
They didn't have enough time. They’d just met, and already fate was stealing him away. She gripped him, held him to her as she sought his lips.
The kiss was far from soft and tender. He crashed his mouth over hers with such force it might leave a bruise. Instead of wincing in pain, she moaned in pleasure and urged him closer, deeper into the kiss. Their tongues mated as their world came crashing down, and a numb darkness covered their existence.
Instantly, there was nothing left. Just her, alone, dying, or maybe living. She didn't know. Didn't know if the spell worked. Didn't know if this were life or hell.
When her eyes opened, she was in her own bed, staring at the ceiling. Only the memories of a phantom man remained, a man with no name, yet her body craved his touch.
Chapter Eight
Morgan flipped through the inventory catalogue online, deciding what to order and what she still had enough of.
Sage sticks were a big seller, always selling out. She wrote down ten inside the quantity box. Next up were charms, and those seemed to be a non-sellers lately, so she skipped over that whole section. She was out of white and red candles, so she ordered both.
Red candles.
Her gaze flittered across her store where a single red candle burned on a glass display table. She didn't know why she was burning it now. Red candles attracted love, but she had never felt such a strong desire to burn them before.
That all had changed with that dream almost a week ago. The dream of a man who mated with her, who made her float and dance upon the air. Every single night she saw his face, and she was certain somewhere in some lifetime she had met him, loved him. Too bad she didn't know more about it. A way to find him.
A piece of her heart cried out for this phantom lover.
Morgan had to stop thinking about him. She turned her attention back to the inventory and submitted the order. She printed the confirmation and made herself comfortable in her chair. Pulling out a panties and bras catalogue, she flipped through it while waiting for some customers to grace her with their presence. The last hour before closing was always a bitch. Half the time, she wanted to put the closed sign up early and leave. She contemplated doing that now as a silver sports car parked before the store. Morgan continued studying her catalogue, earmarking pages of things she intended to buy when the chime over the door pinged indicating a new customer. "Welcome to Morgan's Magic Shop. How can I…" She glanced up, and her words lodged in her throat.
It was him! The phantom man from her dreams. "How can I help you?"
He smiled at her. From the look in his eyes he appeared to be mesmerized by her. "I don't know. I've never been here before. I always drive past it on the way home from work, but I found the address to this store in my jeans." He reached into his jeans pocket and pulled out a slip of paper. "What do you sell here?" he asked and handed her the little folded up sheet.
"Witchcraft stuff." She unfolded the note and stared in wonder. It was her own handwriting.
He cocked his head to the side. "So witches exist?"
She nodded. Her heart beat faster. When and how had she met him before? Clearly, she had done so according to the note. How else would he get a note with her handwriting on it?
He took a step toward her. "You look familiar. Have we met?"
Could it be that he dreamed about her, too? Or did he remember something she couldn't? She shook her head as his words sank in. "I don't think so."
The man stood before her. "My name is Daniel."
"Morgan."
He took her hand. His fingers caressed the back of her palm. Something about his touch seemed familiar, as though she had touched him before. When he brought her hand to his lips, her entire body tingled with sudden desire.
"Are you single?"
She nodded.
He smiled at her sheepishly. "This may sound strange, but I find you absolutely stunning. Would you like to go out to dinner with me?"
"Yes." The single word slipped through her lips before she could even think it through. This was strange, even for her. The man she dreamed of was real, and he was here in front of her. Maybe some magic spell was at work here? How else could she explain that sensation that they had met before?
A smile tugged at her lips as she grabbed her purse and flipped the closed sign on the door. She shut the lights and locked the store. Tonight, she had a date, and she already knew she'd enjoy it.
