“Mr. Steward… how about these documents? Can you identify these?”
Mac hands me another folder and I open it as well to take a quick peek, just to make sure I’m handing him the correct exhibits. I sneak a glance and start to close the folder, when a jolt of shock rushes through me.
Opening the folder back up again, I look down… absolutely stunned speechless.
Laying on the top is a printout of a picture… of a pregnancy test stick with a clear “positive” sign in the little digital window. Below it written in Mac’s handwriting, it says, “Congratulations, babe. We’re pregnant. ”
My eyes snap over to Mac’s, and she’s exuding mischievous joy. I can’t believe she f**king sprung this on me in the middle of a deposition.
“We need to go off the record for a moment,” I say to the court reporter, never taking my eyes off Mac. In fact, my gaze is boring hard into hers, and she refuses to look away from me.
The court reporter says, “We’re off the record,” and I stand up, taking the folder with me as I walk out of the conference room. I hear Mac walking out behind me, but I don’t turn to look at her.
I walk down the hall to a smaller conference room that I know is empty. I open the door, flip on the light, and walk in, throwing the folder in my hand to the table. Mac comes in behind me and as soon as I hear her shut the door, I’m on her.
Pulling her in so quickly she yelps, I kiss her hard, one hand gripping the back of her head, one snug around her waist. I kiss her deep, bending her body backward, pure, unadulterated joy coursing through me.
When I finally pull back and straighten up, she’s smiling at me so brightly that I’m dazzled.
“I can’t believe you just told me you’re pregnant that way,” I scold her, but no way am I mad. It’s so Mac-like for her to have pranked me that way.
She laughs and leans in to kiss me again. “Surprise. ”
I bring my mouth to hers again, kissing her more softly, and then resting my forehead against her so our breath mingles with each other. Bringing my hand up to rest on her lower stomach, I tell her, “I love you so much, baby. ”
“Not half as much as I love you,” she murmurs, brushing her lips against mine.
“Ten times as much as I love you,” I top her.
“But with only three-quarters of the intensity by which I love you,” she quips.
My mind goes blank, and I’ve lost track of the math. No matter, I love her to infinity and I will love our child just the same. I’ll love her until the day I die, and then I’ll love her from beyond. I’ll love her in the next life, and then whatever comes after that.
I just… I just love her.
