Hanna dropped his hand and took a step back. His heart stopped beating for more than a moment, and didn’t start again until a slow smile spread across her face, and she moved forward, throwing her arms around his neck.
She nestled her cheek against his neck, and when she pulled back, his shirt was wet and she swiped at her eyes.
“Colin, there’s nothing in this world that would make me happier. I love you, too. You have shown me that the world is kind, and safe and I want to be part of yours. It wouldn’t be the same without you in it.”
He reached for her, but she turned toward the sea, her arms lifted up and her eyes closed. She didn’t speak, but he could hear her in his heart thanking the sun, the sky and even the spirits, and he knew that they were meant to be together.
She turned back toward him, her arms around his neck again as she stood on her tiptoes and lifted her chin up, kissing him soundly. He pulled her tight, comforted that he would never have to let her go.
Hanna’s hair blew in the breeze as she threw her head back and laughed, her colorful skirt dancing about her knees. She twirled, stopping in front of him.
“You look like a regular Irish dancer,” Colin said. Her beauty still amazed him, and now he knew she was as beautiful inside as out. He pulled her toward him, feeling warmth spread as she rested her head on his shoulder.
Her breathing slowed as she looked up and into his eyes. “Do you remember when we rode the horses out to the fossil mounds? I told you then that the spirits move strangely here.”
“Yes, I do. But I had no idea how wonderful that would be, how much my life would change.”
Hanna smiled as she grabbed his hand, pulling him back toward the fiesta. “Let’s go see what’s waiting for us next.”
He laughed as he ran behind her, wondering what would be next. He realized he couldn’t wait to find out.
