This is their last night here. It makes me sad to see them leave, but I know they have to get back their “real” lives as Claire says.
We decided to go to Lambert’s. It’s one of our favorite restaurants. They are known for throwing rolls across the room. I know it sounds kinda strange, but it is so much fun.
During the peak season around here, there is a one to two hour wait to get in. Let me tell you, it’s worth the wait.
I waved at Claire. She was trying to stop Mallory from running across the parking lot to me. I could hear them calling, “Aunt Becky, Aunt Becky.”
That is one of the sweetest things you’ll ever hear.
I picked up Avery and then Mallory, covering them in kisses. Their giggles were contagious. We walked inside and were seated quickly. We had a wonderful time at dinner, and then we took the kids for some ice cream.
I followed them back to their condo, because the kids wanted to play a little on the beach before their bath time. I happily tagged along, enjoying what little time I had left to spend with them before they went back home.
Trevor whispered something to Claire. She glanced at me and nodded. I knew Trevor wanted to speak with me alone.
Huh? What’s that all about?
“Come walk with me for a minute, Beck.” Trevor stuck his hands in his pockets.
“Okay.” I said cautiously.
He had me a little concerned.
I dusted the sand off my jeans and joined him. I heard Claire tell the kids their daddy would be back soon.
We walked side by side for a few minutes before Trevor broke the silence.
“So, you’ve decided to make Fairhope your home permanently.” Trevor glanced at me as we walked.
It was more of a question than a statement.
I nodded. “For now.”
Trevor stopped and looked out over the ocean.
“I know there is nothing I can say that will convince you to move back.” He sounded lost in his thoughts.
I shook my head. “Nope.”
Trevor faced me and put his hands on my shoulders.
Okay… now what? He had me a little worried.
“I’m glad you took my advice and started dating. It’s good for you to get out there and figure out what you want.” His eyes locked with mine.
Call it my intuition or whatever, but I knew something else was coming.
“Yeah, if you want to call it that.” I laughed and started to pull away.
Trevor’s hold on my shoulders tightened.
What the hell is his problem? He cleared his throat and looked away for a second before returning his gaze back to me.
“What is it, Trevor? I can tell you want to tell me something. Just spit it out, already.”
He sighed loudly.
“I’m glad you’re getting out there again, because… Chad is seeing someone.”
WHAAAAT?
My mind screamed at me. I blinked my eyes, trying to clear them.
Trevor moved his hands from my shoulders, down to my arms, as I felt myself sit down. He looked at me sympathetically.
I didn’t want him to look at me that way!
“I’ve been wanting to tell you for weeks. Dreading it more than anything, but I knew I needed to do it in person.”
I shook my head in disbelief. I don’t know why I’m acting like this. Chad is free to live his life as he chooses. The same as me.
I looked up at Trevor.
“Thank you for telling me, Trevor. It’s none of my business what he does in his personal life anymore. I made sure of that when I left last year.”
He tucked a piece of hair behind my ear that had gone astray.
“You know, sometimes when we try to find our place in the world we lose our way for a little while, but we can always find our way back; making a full circle.”
I raised an eyebrow at that. “That’s very philosophical of you, Trev.”
He chuckled. “Well, I do have my moments.”
I bumped my arm against his. I stood up and took a deep breath. I’ve noticed I have to do that a lot. Take deep breaths to calm down. I need to chill the freak out!
We started walking back to join Claire and the kids.
“Tell me I didn’t make a mistake when I told you about Chad.”
I thought about it for a moment.
“You didn’t make a mistake. It’s good to know he has moved on.” My breath caught at the end of that statement. “I want him to be happy.”
“I’m here anytime you need to talk. Don’t use distance, or anything else, as the reason not to call me.”
I nodded. “I know that. I just don’t want you to feel like you’re being pulled in too many directions.”
“I think I can handle it, sis.”
Once we reached the kids, they looked ready to fall out. Trevor helped Claire carry them inside, and get them ready for their bath.
He and I spoke for a few more minutes, but I knew they were getting up early to travel. We said our good byes with promises of seeing each other soon. I walked away with my thoughts in complete chaos.
The next few days I felt extremely restless.
Nothing made me happy.
Nothing seemed to satisfy me.
I decided to make some changes. One thing I have learned in the past year, you have to make the changes yourself for it to happen.
Make yourself happy. Screw everybody else and their opinions!
That’s how I ended up in a salon chair with Shelby in tow. If you’re going to do something crazy, you need someone equally as crazy. Since Lynn won’t be here until tomorrow, Shelby happily volunteered. Taylor looked like a deer in headlights when we said exactly what we wanted. She was worried and excited to do it at the same time.
“Are you sure about this?”
We reassured her repeatedly.
“Okay. Let’s get started.”
You know what we did.
Yep!
Taylor cut my hair (it was in the middle of my back) to shoulder length. Then she dyed it burgundy.
Yes, BURGUNDY!
Shelby took it a step further and had a few face framing strands of her hair dyed blue. It looked awesome!
You know what? We looked like two badass chicks!
It made me feel badass.
So…
Bring. It. On. World!
I went home that night feeling very confident. The next morning?
Not so much!
I went into the bathroom and glanced up in the mirror. I screamed.
I heard a noise as the door to the guest bedroom flew open. Lynn ran into the bathroom. I guess she arrived sometime last night after I fell asleep.
She came to an abrupt stop in the doorway to the bathroom. Her eyes were as big as saucers.
Lynn covered her mouth.
“Holy shit! You dyed hair!” She screeched.
“It looked great last night when Taylor did it, but this morning…”
Shit! Burgundy hair and my pasty white skin…all I could do was shake my head.
I could tell Lynn wanted to either laugh or cry with me.
“I’m sure it will look better once you have it fixed and some make up on your face.”
I glared at her.
“What?” She held her hands up. “I didn’t have anything to do with it this time. Did you wait for me? Noooo! You had to go ahead and do it on your own.”
“Well, I wasn’t alone. Shelby did the same thing.”
Lynn rolled her eyes. “I can’t leave you two alone for shit.”
Do you know what my best friend did next? She burst out laughing. I stomped out of the bathroom and got dressed.
I could hear Lynn on the phone. From the sound of it, she called Taylor. Lynn shouted back to me, that I’ll have to wait a few days before I can have anything done to my hair. Unless I want my hair to break off.
Umm…no!
That’s okay. I did it, so I’ll own. It’ll just take some getting used to it. I wanted
a change, anyway. Right?
I may look like the walking dead with this hair, but I’ll rock it!
CHAPTER 8
I don’t know how Lynn is able to talk me into crazy shit. I know it is wrong when I agree to it, so why do it? You know that little voice that tells you when you shouldn’t do something? Well, I tend to ignore it when I shouldn’t.
“I’m really excited about meeting him. We’ve been talking for months, and he is willing to come here to meet me.”
I looked at her skeptically. “Do you even know what he looks like?”
Lynn grimaced. “He sent me a pic, but I think it was an old one. It looks a little dated.”
“How dated?”
“Well, the clothes look like something the guys wore when we were in high school.”
I rolled my eyes. Here we go again. Lynn’s insane impulses to meet people from the internet was starting to freak me out.
“So, he’s going to meet us at the IHOP in Daphne?”
“Yes.”
Alrighty, then! Lynn can talk to the train man, and I can eat pancakes. It’s a win-win situation. Right?
She refers to him as the train man. Apparently, he works for the railroad. The first time she said the train man had called her, I snorted so hard I almost choked on my drink. I mean, who would take that seriously? She wasn’t amused.
Lynn has been so excited to meet him. I’m less than excited. She has met some very interesting men, but they have not been what she was led to believe. I know…shocker. However, that doesn’t seem to stop her from meeting the next one.
We left my apartment and drove to Daphne. It only took a few minutes to reach the IHOP, and I was pleasantly surprised to see it wasn’t too busy. Of course, it’s 10:30 at night, so...
Lynn sent Tommy, she reminded me that’s his name, a text to let him know we were already here. He responded back instantly.
A white Ford pickup truck pulled into the parking space next to us. She and I looked out her window to see if it was him.
“Umm...I think that’s him.” Lynn said quietly.
I couldn’t really see anything through the tinted windows of his truck. Lynn opened her door and got out of the car and walked over to the truck. Damn! That girl is gonna get into some shit one day. I got out of the car to join her crazy ass.
“Hey, Beck. Come here and meet Tommy.”
I tried to smile. I don’t know what I expected. I do know it wasn’t this.
I guess I only know the type of man Lynn has always been attracted to. They are usually tall, dark brown hair, and take a lot of pride in their appearance. I don’t mean a pretty boy type, just a little effort is always appreciated. You know?
Well…Tommy doesn’t fit that at all. He does have dark hair, so there’s that. I couldn’t help but stare at him. He was wearing jeans and an old white t-shirt that fit snugly over his protruding stomach. Oh, thank the good Lord, it covered his gut.
Barely.
I glanced at Lynn out of the corner of my eye, and caught her doing the same. Definitely not the same as the athletic looking guy in the photo she showed me on the way here.
Far from it.
Tommy offered to buy us something to eat so he and Lynn could talk. Lynn didn’t order anything and looked at me with disgust when I ordered pancakes.
How have I known this chick this long and not known she doesn’t like pancakes? It’s just unnatural. Everybody likes pancakes.
Since Tommy is paying, I took advantage of his generosity.
I was trying to ignore their conversation. Lynn’s giggling made it difficult. I tuned in enough to hear Tommy’s suggestion that we go back to his hotel room so we can all relax. I looked at Lynn. Surely, she won’t agree to this.
Yeah, she did.
The pancakes I just ate felt like lead in my stomach. Just fucking great!
We left after he paid, and followed him to his hotel. Lynn explained that she felt she owed him her time since he came all the way down here to see her.
“Please tell me you didn’t promise him sex when you spoke with him earlier.”
Lynn grimaced.
Ah, shit!
We were still sitting in the car. Tommy was looking at us anxiously.
“He has been so sexy on the phone, but the picture he sent me doesn’t match the way he looks now. It has to be at least 15 years old.” She sounded disappointed.
I had to take a deep breath. Like this was a shocker.
“So, we followed him here for what exactly?”
Lynn shrugged. “I guess to talk or whatever.”
“The “whatever” is what I’m worried about.” I glanced out the window at him. “I bet he hasn’t been laid in years.”
“Becky!” Lynn shouted.
I ignored her and got out of the car. All I have to say is, he better not be a psycho!
We didn’t say anything as we followed her train man to his room, passing some business men along the way. I saw them smirk at Tommy. Great! They probably think he is getting both of us tonight. I hope they don’t think we’re hookers.
I walked in behind Lynn and sat down in a chair that was situated in the corner of the room.
Tommy chuckled. “Those guys were jealous.”
“What?” Lynn asked, confused.
“They saw the two of you walking in here with me.” He wiggled his eyebrows.
I snorted. Tommy frowned at me, but do you think that stopped him from looking me up and down?
Nope.
Asshole!
“You two ever do anything like that?” Tommy was running his fingers over Lynn’s hip.
I laughed. Lynn glared at me.
“No! I don’t do women.” Lynn shuddered.
I couldn’t hold myself back. I know…bad shit happens when I do that.
“But…if she did, I would be the one Lynn would choose.”
“Shit.” Lynn shook her head at me.
I ignored her, because a very wicked thought entered my head. I looked at Lynn. Her eyes were wide. That girl knows when I get that look, you better watch out.
Tommy sat down on the bed, pulling Lynn beside him.
“You know you don’t have to kiss each other or anything.”
Lynn looked startled. “What?”
I smiled. “So, you’re saying you want to be with both of us?”
His smile widened. Lynn’s eyes looked like they were going to pop out of her head.
That made me even more brazen. Why not mess with him a little? I’m sure he never gets that kind of attention. EVER.
“Come here, Lynn. Let’s have a chat.” I motioned her over to where I sat.
“What the hell, Becky?” She hissed.
I held up my hands to interrupt her.
“Look, he lied to you about the way he looks because he has low self- esteem. He looks like a drooling dog over there. We are goddesses to him.”
“I’m not having sex with him.” Lynn hissed.
I arched my eyebrow. “Yeah, I know. However, train man over there thinks you came here to do just that.”
“Fuck.”
“Exactly. What did you think with all the shit you’ve been telling him on the phone?”
“I know.” At least she had the good sense to show some remorse.
“What are y’all talking about over there. I’m right here.” Tommy was leaning back on the bed.
I looked at Lynn and we nodded.
I walked over to one side of the bed and Lynn was on the other.
“I don’t have sex with men I don’t know.”
Tommy looked at my chest and licked his lips. “That’s alright.”
Lynn cleared her throat. “I’m not ready to have sex with you, but we can still have some fun.
That got his attention!
“Oh yeah? What kind of fun?”
I looked around the room and found what I was looking for. The sash from his robe will work nicely.
I walked over to him.
I almost la
ughed out loud. His eyes widened once he realized I intended to use the sash.
“Close your eyes.”
He looked nervous and excited at the same time.
Good.
“What are you going to do?” His voice shook.
“You want to be with us any way you can, right?”
He nodded.
“Then you have to play by the rules.”
Tommy sat there for a few seconds before he nodded.
Good boy.
I tied the sash, making sure he couldn’t see. I pushed him back on the bed. I looked at Lynn. She was trying her best not to laugh out loud. She mouthed, what now? I shrugged.
I gritted my teeth while I ran my fingers across his chest. I glanced at Lynn. She started rubbing his leg.
We are fucking insane!
Tommy grabbed my breast and starting massaging it. My mouth dropped open and I froze for a moment. Lynn’s eyes widened.
I grabbed his hand to make him stop.
“No touching.” I pushed his arm above his head.
“But I want to touch you.”
No fucking way!
Thank goodness Lynn rescued me. “We only want to touch you, unless you want us to stop.”
“No, don’t stop.” He said a little too breathlessly.
“Then you need to follow our rules.” Lynn said firmly.
“Okay.” He sighed.
I shook my head. Why do I let myself get into shit like this?
Lynn got my attention and whispered to me.
“Do you want to see?” She pointed at his zipper.
I leaned back and shook my head.
“Are you crazy?” I mouthed to her.
Lynn shrugged. I rolled my eyes and looked back his Tommy’s face. I heard her unzip his pants. A smile spread across his face.
“I want to suck your nipples.” He had his head turned toward me.
Shit!
I looked at Lynn and she was barely containing her laughter. Just wait, because she knows that payback is a bitch.
I know it’s reckless, and he is not attractive, but who the fuck the cares! I pulled my shirt up, just above my breasts.
Damn it! I would be wearing my favorite lacy, black bra. Such a shame I’ll have to burn it after this.
What a waste!
I leaned over Tommy and this mouth latched onto my breast.
“Take off your bra, honey.”
Honey? We’re not that close.
