  “Heddle will become overtly schizophrenic?”

  “That is the psychologist’s belief, sir.”

  Anderson nodded and turned to Green. “Well, Bill, that seems to be that.”

  “It worries me,” replied Green. “She was merely being nice to him and he got hold of the wrong end of the stick. If she’d slapped him down, she’d still be alive. We none of us know when we’re signing our own death warrants these days.”

  “Innocence and decency bring their own dangers,” agreed Anderson sagaciously, and got to his feet to indicate the meeting was over.
