Radigis left a silence betwixt them for her to fill. It was an old and undignified trick, and of course the woman would know it well – she was better-educated than he in the subtleties of guiding men’s minds – but in her distress at her daughter’s condition might lift her guard.
Al-Fihri spoke in an even voice. “How do you propose to work this? From what I can tell, you will need the support of the Witegamot, or at least some of it.”
“One of us has the ear of a powerful man,” Radigis reminded her. The far door had yet to open, and beside him in the dark he felt al-Fihri shuffle, perhaps uneasy.
“You give too much credence to the fraction I have of his kindness,” she said, cool-voiced.
“My friend, I give due credit to the subtlety of your asking,” he corrected her. “We shall, in good time, see your family restored to you and good heart to this dominion. In the meantime,” he lowered his voice as the door ahead began the loud and labour-heavy process of unlocking, and their assumed privacy began to crumble, “both of us must work this thing well.”

This book would not have been possible without the following people: Tiffany Tan, who shared her experiences of growing up as the daughter of a genocide survivor and whose memoirs I will heartily recommend should you encounter them; Amy Parker, for her editing suggestions and careful reading; and Heather Kelly for proof-reading.
