“What did you do?” Emily repeated.
“Not a thing.” They started heading for the door, leaving Hannah and Emily to run after them.
“You don’t even have a key,” Hannah called.
“Then let me in.”
“What did you do?” Emily repeated.
Only when Emily had closed the door behind them and Alys had handed them both beers did they finally say, “Well, I did have to practice impersonating you before we got back to Earth, didn’t I?”
Emily groaned. “For fuck’s sake.”
“I just told her to make it quick. Not even to make him suffer or anything. You know she’d have never listened to me. And I needed to make sure Hannah was safe.”
Hannah stared at them. After all this, had they seriously arranged a murder? Or an execution? It was just wrong. “You didn’t…Won’t that send him straight back to Hel?”
“Okay, I may have said a little more than to make it quick. Just what she’d have to remove to make sure he couldn’t contact Hel while they kept him imprisoned indefinitely.” Their expression grew bashful.
Emily drained her beer.
Hannah followed her example. “You can’t just…we…” She gave an exasperated sigh.
“I know you don’t like it. But I will do anything it takes to keep you safe. And I completely understand if that makes you change your mind about what you wanted to ask me.”
How was Hannah still into them? Alys had mind-controlled her, covered up murders, and instructed someone to hurt a prisoner while pretending to be her girlfriend. And they’d done it all to protect her. She shook her head. “No. It doesn’t, though it definitely should. You really need to not manipulate people so much.”
“I know.”
“You could’ve asked me to tell her,” Emily said.
They stared for a long moment. “That didn’t even occur to me.”
“That’s a great sign,” Hannah said. “I have amazing taste.”
“Yeah, I’m the worst.” Alys sighed, draining their beer. “You should probably back out now.”
In a single quick motion, Hannah pulled Alys to her. “I already made my decision. Emily is okay with it, and you’re living with us anyway. Go out with me.”
They nodded their head, gaping. “Okay.”
“Good.” Their lips met in a heated kiss, with none of the comfort and fear of their first one. Hannah needed to finally make it real. It didn’t matter how bad an idea this was. It didn’t matter how many horrible things Alys had done for Hel. Hannah was falling for them. And she needed to see where it could go. They didn’t pull apart until Emily cleared her throat.
“I get one too?”
“Of course!” Hannah plopped into her lap and grinned before kissing her.
“Damn, and I thought she meant me.”
They ignored Alys’s joke, deepening the kiss, Emily’s hands running down Hannah’s back. She’d known months ago that she was finally having her dream come true. She was going to be an accountant at one of the most reputable businesses in the city. She’d just had no idea what else that dream had in store.
