Showdown in the Economy of Good and Evil

by Jarl Jensen

Everyone accepted that the structure of this economic system was complex and unpredictable. They would use their income from working to pay for housing that kept getting more expensive because of the trickle-down housing market, which meant they would have less and less for everything else. In this way, everyone kept working harder and harder until life felt like a rat race. The people cherished their freedom while more and more people took on second and third jobs, working well past what used to be retirement age.

One day, an author self-published a book that arrived on Amazon in late 2017. It was called Optimizing America. The author found himself shaken by the direction humanity was heading, so he wrote the book in the hopes of changing the dire future for the planet and its inhabitants.

“I’m an inventor,” he said, “and I can help make a better world.”

When the people read his book (in vastly fewer numbers than he had hoped), some of them pointed out that they did not think the problems the author addressed were quite so urgent. The author was shaken once again.

“There is something very wrong with the world,” the author said on social media. “There is no conductor on this train called humanity, and eventually, we are going to crash. What we need is purpose. What we need is direction. What we need is an economy that drives us toward a sustainable future.”

When the people on social media expressed their confusion, the author explained that the necessary changes were simple.

“We simply need to kick the bankers out of the Federal Reserve and the central banks in all the countries, and we need to change monetary policy so that people come first and banks come last.”

Satisfied that he would soon change everyone’s lives for the better, the author sipped his Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, sat back, and enjoyed the latest impeachment hearings. But then he realized that hardly anyone was reading his books or taking notice of his social media posts. Even worse, the people who did take notice responded with disheartening assumptions.

“If people are given direct deposits,” they said, “then you are basically promoting basic income. Have you seen Andrew Yang? Why should we have to work and pay so much more in taxes so people can have basic income?”

The author rolled his eyes. “Basic income, my friends, will not work. And it is nothing like direct deposits. The two are like oranges and apples. For instance, all your lives, you have lived under a system that is debt driven, which means trickle-down economics. You will all be better off living in a world of trickle-up economics, which is what direct deposits creates. And if the policy is reinforced with tax-free, low-cost housing, then a trickle-up housing market would also emerge. And lo and behold, the rat race would be eviscerated, and we could all live happily ever after.”

Another person disagreed, commenting skittishly on the author’s web page. “How dare you write such negative propaganda against our great white hope, POTUS?” she asked, accompanied by a 1-star review on Amazon.

“Honestly, the book has nothing to do with Trump,” the author said. “Did you read it?”

The supporters of the “great white hope, POTUS” hadn’t read the author’s reply either. But they sure tacked on the negative reviews.

“Your ideas would cause massive inflation,” another scolded.

“Direct deposits are inflationary,” the author replied, “but that is nothing compared to the monetary policy that lets banks lend money out over and over again. Currently there is seventy-seven times more debt than actual money. If quantitative easing was reversed, it would pay for direct deposits for decades. So, no, direct deposits do not cause inflation. If you adjust monetary policy accordingly, there is no issue.”

“What will happen to social programs if direct deposits are put in place?” another said. “People are still going to want their social security checks. So what’s the point?”

“It will take fifteen to twenty years to completely wean society off government social programs,” the author replied.

Hardly anyone pondered the author’s response, since his readership was abysmal.

“I loved your book and I want to hear more from you,” one enthusiastic reader said.

The author smiled. “Sign up to my mailing list. Be the first to get my next book. Spread the word to your friends and family. Books three and four are on the way. Let’s make the world a better place.”

“What are you going to do to help make these changes?”

The author thought about this question for a while. And then he replied, “There is a saying: you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. I’m going to write great books that hold the keys to solve humanity’s greatest problems. The least humanity could do is make it a best seller.”

If you have not read the original book in the series, it’s called “Optimizing America”. The book is free on Amazon, so have a look.
