JJ had asked the guys to say their goodbyes to Milena after breakfast. They’d been so sweet in hugging her during the farewell. They’d even surprised Milena with a framed picture of the ranch house so she would remember that she was always welcome here. A bank account had been opened in her name and her pay from ranch sitting would be waiting for her when she got out of prison and had access.

JJ choked back a sob, nodded and accepted the rock. It glittered in the sunlight and already made her feel a bit better.
Then Milena ducked under the wing, stepped onto the pontoon and climbed into the plane.
JJ spied the doctor at one of the window seats, her smile was caring and gentle. Then she saw Milena’s pale face in a window behind the doctor as she took her seat. Tears flashed in the sunlight as they streamed down Milena’s cheeks. The plane roared to life and Milena waved goodbye.
And then she was gone. As if she’d just been a dream.
JJ inhaled a shuddering breath as she watched the bright bush plane disappear into the blue distance.
She prayed that they would meet again. Prayed that Jenna would find a suitable and permanent placement for her friend.
After a few minutes of sobbing, JJ bit her bottom lip and forced herself to steady her breathing. Okay, she needed to pull herself together and get back into her routine. She needed to distract herself from the pain off loss that was hugging her.
She’d gotten close to Milena again and now it felt as if her heart was ripping apart in much the same way it had that morning when she’d learned that Milena had been transferred to another prison.
JJ gazed at the empty space by the dock where her plane should be moored. She wished she could go up and fly. To be free and to forget.
She always felt so good soaring into the sky. But the plane was still out in that small meadow. Thankfully Kailey was coming next week to fly JJ to the area where she’d downed the plane. After explaining to her ex-flight instructor what had happened, Kailey said she suspected that she knew what the problem could be. Until then, she was grounded. She wished she could stay here and feel sorry for herself and fully embrace the hurt she felt for Milena having to go back to prison. She knew it was torture for her friend. It had to be.
But JJ didn’t want to make herself sadder than she already felt with Milena’s departure. The sun was shining, the air was warm and fresh and she wished she could stay down here and absorb the beauty of the shimmering lake waters. But there were so many chores to catch up on. She had a ranch to run and she’d best get to it.
Protectively she cradled her belly as she walked up the trail.
“Baby girl or baby boy, you are going to be so happy here. You’ll have three dads and they all love you so much,” she said softly under her breath. She laughed as the baby gave her a swift kick.
“I cannot wait to meet you, sweetheart. I already love you so much that I swear if anything had happened to you during that crash, I would have died.” And she meant it.

She smiled and stepped up the stairs to the back door of the ranch house. She let herself into the mudroom, suddenly eager to get started on preparing dinner for the guys. A nice pot roast, drenched in onions, carrots, and herbs from the garden would be perfect. She would let the roast simmer slowly all afternoon in the crock pot and it would be ready just in time for supper. And then after they ate they could indulge in dessert. Sex.
