“Everything.”
They looked at the cocoons with new eyes.
“Aelfae crypts. Creepy.” Dindi hugged her arms around her shoulders.
“At least they aren’t going to hatch a hundred giant spider babies,” said Umbral.
“Ugh.”
“The Bone Whistler thought he could bring them back to life, and somehow that would be the first step to bringing his whole people back to life.” Umbral frowned. “I still don’t see how.”
“The Bone Whistler killed thousands of people while he was War Chief,” Dindi said. “None of that blood brought back a single Aelfae. The Bone Whistler may be powerful enough to scare Death herself, but he’s also crazier than a drunk troll.”
“Something brought back the Aelfae in the bog. It’s not a coincidence, Dindi. And if he tried it once, he’ll try it again. We have to stop him.”
“We? We’re a ‘we’ now?”
“Aren’t we?”
“I guess we are.”
“The first thing we have to do,” he said, “is destroy these cocoons before the Bone Whistler sacrifices innocent humans to bring these foul fae back to life…”
The six cocoons began to hum. They blushed with light, soft and sweet at first, but growing sharper, brighter, spicier until the air was so bright it burned their tongues. They fell to the ground. The illumination subsided, but the cocoons still glowed eerie colors. A scratching sounded from within.
Hands clawed at the webbing—from inside. Human forms ripped and tore their way free of the cocoons. The liberated beings were naked, three men and three women. Five of them uncurled wet wings from their backs and flapped them until the wings were full and dry. The sixth, the youngest, a girl with small pert breasts, who looked no older than Dindi, peered at her own back and stomped her foot.
“Back from the dead and still no wings?” she said, full of exasperation. “It’s just not fair!”
Then she saw Dindi and Umbral and her jaw fell open. “Who are you? Where’s Vessia? Where’s Xerpen?”
“Who are we? Who are you?” Dindi retorted.
But she already knew.
Six Aelfae stood in a circle blinking at them.
