I opened the gates and stepped into the courtyard, slamming them shut behind me. They made a loud, clanging noise that was extremely final. Jeremy Bond lingered on the pavement a moment, peering at me through the fancy iron curlicues, a smile on his lips, a rich brown wave splayed untidily over his brow. The garden was abloom with fragrant flowers. The fountain splashed softly, water spilling from one small white marble basin into the larger one below, a plump, mossy cupid perched on top. Bond looked at me, cocky, confident, determined, and then he nodded and strode away.
I stood in the garden for several minutes, bewildered, disturbed, filled with conflicting emotions. I would have to tell Derek what happened. I wondered what I was going to say—and just how much I would have to conceal.
