His To Steal Page 25

by Taylor Vaughn

I nod. “T’Kan is in his last day of talks but I can get him to put it on the agenda for next quarter’s visit.”

“Thanks, but I’m not sure that’s going to be quick enough. I’ve been thinking, so many of these Xalthurian fathers have turned out to be bigwigs. Maybe there’s something Glee’s father could do to get us clearance to move to Xalthuria. If he’s married, I would even be willing to come to Xalthuria as a servant. I just need to get Glee out of here.”

“Yes, I understand, but…” I wince. “In order for any arrangement to happen, we have to find out who her father is, and that means getting around the Big Red Obstacle.”

  T’Kan

The Big Red Obstacle. That is what Zin’nia has nicknamed L’Gon.

But in this case, he turns out to be anything but.

My request for information is met within the hour and L’Gon personally holos me at my satellite office in the royal palace to tell me he has made the information transfer.

“Anything to help N’Thn,” he says when I thank him for his speedy response. “And if you think the Ceremony Mind Rot can be actually used as to help those prisoners, of course I will cooperate.”

He says this with a distasteful click. But medics, while trained the same, tend not to be as good at covering their emotions as the warriors they tend to after battle.

His gaze drop to the baby strapped to my chest, and I can see the longing in his eyes.

Perhaps Zin’nia is right and I should stop referring to the love as a disease. I cannot help but think L’Gon’s disdainful label for the emotion he insists on calling Ceremony Mind Rot is part of the reason he has become increasingly anti-hu’man in the years since his own breeding ceremony.

After I end the hole, a part of me wonders how different his attitude might have been toward the New Terrhans, if his Breeding Ceremony trip had actually yielded a Xalling.

However, those suppositional thoughts quickly fall away when I see the names on my cousin’s DNA matching file.

“Hi Dada! Hi Dada!” Ste’vie wobbles to her feet and runs over to hug my leg when I arrive in the main suite of our Xalthuria royal city residence.

At the same time, Buck kicks his legs and arms, letting out an ear-piercing scream for his mother.

He has inherited, my violet eyes and golden skin, but unfortunately when it comes to his emotions he falls on the far more human side of the spectrum—especially when he is hungry.

“Okay, I hear ya, little Xal,” Zin’nia says with a laugh. She takes him from the sling and immediately puts him to her breast.

I am glad for the distraction as I am still dreading the news I must impart.

But pushing those thoughts away, I lift Ste’vie into my arms and twirl her around as she bursts into a fit of giggles. Even during my most stressful days, coming back to these three every night makes every long day feel like a gratitude owed the fates. They are my home.

And I almost wish I had not asked L’Gon for the information about N’Thn. For it complicates things greatly.

“Hey, I need to talk to you about the Big Red Obstacle,” Zin’nia says after last meal, when both children have been put down in their room and we have the chance to enjoy a glass of berry wine together in ours. “I assume you weren’t able to get the information about N’Thn off of him yet.”

I freeze mid-sip, wanting to lie to her and use her assumptions about L’Gon to put this conversation off to another day.

But lying to her nearly destroyed us after the purple forest. I will never risk our relationship like that again.

“Actually, he gave me the information I requested, right away.”

Her beautiful face lights up. “Really?”

“Yes, really,” I answer, my ridges rippling miserably. I wish I could be as excited by this news as she.”

“Because, Nova wants to move Glee here, so we need to find out who her father is, too,” she says.

At same time I tell her, “Unfortunately, as it turns out, Nova was the hu’man N’Thn bred. And Glee is his daughter.”

Then we both pause. Stare at each other.

“What?!” I click and she says at the same time.

  Oh. My. Moons.
