“Remember that fancy car I told you about, Jenny?” he asked urgently. “The one I saw Ocean riding in?”
Jenny nodded.
“It’s parked in the town square, near that big stage.”
“Let’s check it out,” Adam said purposefully.
He strode out and Jenny, Peter and Captain Charlie followed him. It was a red Ferrari and it had been parked close to the stage. A few questions to the crowd revealed that the car belonged to Bobby Joe Tucker.
“Are you sure this is the same car?” Adam asked Captain Charlie.
He shrugged.
“Sure looks like it. We don’t have another car like this in town.”
“I think you should head home now, Jenny,” Adam told her. “Things might get ugly here.”
The Magnolias had already planned a spa night at Seaview, Jenny’s home. They ordered pizza from Mama Rosa’s and made strawberry daiquiris. Molly mixed her special face packs for all of them.
Three hours later, the ladies lay sprawled around the room, stuffed with pizza and Star’s caramel pumpkin pie. Star and Betty Sue had each commandeered a couch while the younger girls lay on the plush carpet.
The doorbell rang and Adam came in, looking tired and hungry.
“Tell us what happened,” Betty Sue ordered. “Did that stuffed peacock kill that poor boy?”
Adam collapsed in a chair and nodded. Jenny heated some pizza for him while he began telling his story.
“Bobby Joe came to Pelican Cove sometime in the summer.”
“How do we not know that?” Heather cried.
“His tour bus broke down somewhere on the highway. He came into town one evening and heard Tyler sing in the square. He thought the song had potential.”
“So what? He just stole it from Tyler?” Jenny asked, incensed.
“Not at first,” Adam said. “Bobby Joe offered to buy the song from Tyler. Apparently, it’s a thing. These street singers often sell their music to big stars. They don’t have the money to record them or market them. And they need to survive.”
“So Bobby Joe thought Tyler would sell him his music,” Jenny said, catching on.
“That’s right,” Adam nodded. “But he didn’t know Tyler’s background. Tyler had more than enough money to buy his own record label. And I guess that was his long term plan.”
“So Tyler refused to sell,” Heather summed up. “What did Bobby Joe do?”
“He came here a few times, trying to convince Tyler,” Adam explained. “They had a fight where Tyler called him names. Bobby Joe strangled him in a fit of anger. He said he just lost control.”
“What about Ocean?” Jenny asked. “Did he kill him too?”
“Ocean’s murder was more cold blooded,” Adam told them. “He was familiar with Tyler’s music. He caught on to Bobby Joe as soon as he heard his hit single. He wanted to blackmail him.”
“Bobby Joe wasn’t willing to pay him?” Jenny asked. “He did steal the song.”
“Bobby Joe paid him once,” Adam sighed. “But Ocean got greedy. Bobby Joe agreed to pay him a big sum to make him go away. They were supposed to meet at that beach near the bridge. Bobby Joe saw an opportunity and finished him off.”
“Why did Bobby Joe come back to Pelican Cove after killing Tyler?” Heather asked. “Shouldn’t he have gone miles away from here?”
“We asked him that,” Adam told them. “He was hoping to get inspired and write some good music here, just like Tyler did. Personally, I think he got cocky. He thought he was invincible.”
“Poor Tyler,” Jenny said sadly. “He didn’t deserve to die.”
“Thanks to you, his killer won’t roam free,” Adam said, his eyes full of admiration. “You did it again, Jenny.”
“We need to go to Richmond tomorrow,” Jenny told the girls.
Jenny wanted to meet Tyler’s grandpa and explain everything. Tyler’s last wish had come true in a roundabout way. His song was Number 1 on the charts. Mr. Jones would use his resources to make sure Tyler got credit for it.
Jenny was looking forward to a pit stop on the way. She had chosen her wedding dress. She couldn’t wait to order it.
Jenny gave Adam a secret smile. Their big day was just around the corner.
Epilogue
It was a mild fall day in Pelican Cove. The weatherman predicted a pleasant day with highs in the 60s. Cool winds blew in from the north, making the air a bit chilly.
A small group of people had assembled in the garden by the beach. They wore broad smiles as they waited for the ceremony. A beautiful arch decorated with roses and gardenias was erected at one end. The pale peach voile draped around the arch matched the giant bows tied to the chairs.
Jenny’s son stood on one side, ready to give her away. Betty Sue had been chosen to officiate the wedding. She looked imposing as usual in a red silk dress and matching hat.
Jenny’s closest friends waited inside the house with her. Adam’s daughters looked beautiful in matching yellow dresses. Heather and Molly wore shades of russet and Star was dressed in a vibrant orange gown.
The bride was trying to quell the butterflies in her stomach. She was a vision in ivory, wearing the dress of her dreams. Long sleeved with a sweetheart neckline, it had a three foot long train and a bodice embroidered in tiny pearls. She wore a tiara on her head and a rose from the garden was tucked into her hair.
Everyone was eagerly waiting for the groom. His brother Ethan was going to drive him over.
An hour later, they were still waiting for Adam. Ethan Hopkins arrived with a screech of brakes. He looked at Star and shook his head.
Heather’s phone rang just then. Her face turned ashen as she listened to the voice at the other end. She stared at Jenny, unable to utter a word.
“That was Adam,” she finally whispered.
A single tear rolled down Jenny’s face as she took in her friend’s dismay.
“He’s not coming, is he?”
