“I thought it would be bigger.” One of the men in the room said.
“Catch.” She threw it at the man.
He let her mom go to catch it. Tara elbowed him in the crouch making him bend over. She caught the portal and rolled.
Mekhi wrenched the gun from his hand and used it to shoot him in the forehead. His brother surrounded the other two men disarming them.
“I want to know who you work for,” Slade told them.
They dragged them out of the door.
Tara stood up and returned the portal to her daughter. “I think this will be over soon. Now I can go see my Quintin.”
“I know mom that’s terrific. Wait… What?”
“I’m tired baby.”
“No, you’re not. Dad loves you, and you love him, but he’s okay waiting for you. What about your grandchildren?”
“You’re pregnant?” Mekhi's face was gray.
“Not yet but I will be, and they will need their grandmother. You can move closer to us mom, please don’t leave.”
“You’re right dear they will need me. I think they will be little hellions.”
Her mother hugged her. They would work it out in the end.
Chapter Twenty-seven
“Is it over?” Quinn was silent the whole way home. Now they were sitting upstairs. Tee was in her arms demanding rubs and purring up a storm.
“It’s over. Soon we will know who keeps sending men after you, and we’ll stop them.”
She nodded; peace was coming. It was a strange feeling to realize her life had never been peaceful. She thought she was as boring as the next person, to be proven wrong still made her stomach tight.
“What about us?”
“We go on. We will be the average mated couple, nothing happening in our life.”
He rolled his eyes, and she laughed. Someday she would ask where he learned to do that.
“Average, right. We have a portal with access to riches. You and your brothers causally steal from the vault on the Aba home planet. I like being average.”
She put Tee down with one last rub and slid closer to Mekhi, who was on the couch next to her.
Lifting she licked the shell of his ear. “Why don’t you tell me more about this life we will live?”
“I did leave out the best part.” He picked her up and carried her to the bedroom. “Tee, you might not want to see this.” He slammed the door shut then placed her on the bed.
“You are beautiful.”
She ran her hand down her slim curves. A smile lit her lips because he liked what he saw. Her teeth snapped on the thank you that wanted to come out. It was still a new feeling to be liked for who she was, but she loved it.
“I think you're beautiful too.” He snarled at her, and she laughed. “I meant handsome.” She reached up and pulled him down.
He laid on her just holding for a long time.
“You make my heart happy, and at times you make it ache. I don’t know why but I can’t give you up Quinn.”
“I’m not leaving, you don’t have to worry.” She kissed him making her promise physical. His tongue devoured hers making her head spin.
“Too many clothes.” He pulled her t-shirt off and then reached for the snap on her jeans. He opened them and then gave her a kiss on her belly before pulling them down her legs. “Much better.”
She shook her head no as her tongue moistened her lips. “Now you’re wearing too many clothes.”
He sat up and pulled off his shirt and his jeans almost ripping them in his haste.
“We’re going to take it nice and slow.”
She bit her lip to hide her smile as she nodded yes to him. His voice was already thick with need. It hadn’t been long enough, and they hadn’t made love enough times for him to slow down. It was in his eyes the fear that he would reach for her, and she wouldn’t be there. She didn’t judge or condemn him because she knew the same fear lived inside of her. In her dreams something happened to separate them. She could never remember what, but whatever it was scared her.
He drew a finger down her throat bringing her out of her thoughts.
“I’m here, now you can show me what nice and slow looks like.” He grinned at her making her stomach swirl with butterflies.
“It starts off with me kissing you here.” He went to the base of her throat and sucked on her pulse point before he kissed it. He made his way down her body taking his time to kiss and nibble on her until he was at the top of her breasts.
Taking a finger, he used it to trace the tops of her breasts giving her random bites. A little moan of desire came from her. Then he took his finger and trailed it down her breast until he was circling the nipple. He watched as the bud became stiff until it was standing up begging for his attention.
He nipped at it causing her to lift her hips up before he took it into his mouth and sucked on it. Her hand went to the back of his head holding him close. A ragged moan of desire came from her as his other hand pinched her nipple making it hard and needy.
“Is this slow?” Her words were slurred as he pulled on both nipples.
“Any slower and I’ll die from want.” His voice was gruff.
Her hand went down her body searching for her clit. He growled and moved her hand away.
“That’s not slow.”
It wasn’t, but she didn’t care. She needed more of him and more sensations. He rolled over on his back taking her with him. She was over his thick cock. He rocked her back and forth until he was inside of her like she was a glove made for him. Her wetness made her slide easily over him as he teased her. His cock bumped against her clit tearing little sounds of need from her each time.
“Mekhi.”
“I promised slow.”
She was going to hurt him, and the word ‘slow’ if he kept this up. Her pussy was throbbing, needing to be filled, and he was teasing her. He reached down and took his cock rubbing it against her slit. He let it linger before he moved it away.
“I’m a real woman, not a toy.” She took his cock moved her hips and impaled herself. A moan of satisfaction came from both of them as she sank down on him.
“I love the way you do slow.” A shiver of need took over her body at the sound of his voice.
His hands went around her waist setting a pace that was slower than either of them wanted. Her hands were flat against his chest as she tried to move faster.
“Slow tiny warrior.”
He placed his feet on the bed and lifted his hips driving into her. Her breath caught as she felt every movement deep inside of her. She nodded her head as she lifted and dropped back down. A hiss of pleasure came from him as he quickened the pace.
She met him thrust for thrust loving the way her breasts bounced, and how his eyes watched them. He lifted his head to get closer. She leaned over so he could suck on one of her nipples. He sucked hard sending pleasure through her breast even as he pounded deep inside of her.
She felt the pressure building along her spine threatening to overwhelm her. He held her tight and reversed their positions, so he was on top. His hips slammed into hers making her eyes roll back as her mouth lifted on a loud keening cry.
Her pussy clenched his cock trying to keep it within her even as her heart fluttered with the love she felt for him.
“I love you Mekhi with everything I have I love you.”
He struck her deep inside, and she shattered. Every thought was flung to the wind as she held on tight. She shuddered as pleasure poured over her. His cry of bliss filled her ears as they clung to each other the only safety in the storm that was raging around them.
He pulled her into his arms as they finally landed. His heart ached as he wondered what it would take to stop the pain.
Chapter Twenty-eight
The ringing of the phone woke her up.
“I think someone is calling you.” Her words were slurred with sleep. This was the start of their forever, and she wasn’t ready to wake up.
“That’s your phone.
”
“Mom?” Her eyes popped open as she made her way to the side of the bed and reached for her phone on the night stand.
“Hello.”
“Quinn Connor?”
“Speaking.” The voice on the other end was a male. He may be a possible business contact. She went from sleepy and happy to professional.
“Hi, this is Jim O’Connell. I got your number from your commercial. Have I reached you at a bad time?”
“No, Mr. O’Connell. I wasn’t expecting to hear from you.”
“I wasn’t expecting to call.”
He was responsible for the new high-rise building being built in town. She had put in a bid for the job but hadn’t gotten past the first stage.
“How can I help you, Mr. O’Connell?” She was sitting on the edge of the bed looking at Mekhi with a WTF look on her face.
“There have been some issues with the project I am managing. I went back over several bids for the jobs, and several plans that were submitted and your name came up multiple times. Would it be possible for you to meet me downtown at the site? I would like to talk to you.”
She opened her mouth but was too stunned to say anything. Mekhi was mouthing the word yes at her.
“Yes.” The word came out in a rush before she could get hold of herself.
“Can you be there in two hours?”
“I’ll be there.”
“See you then.” He hung up the phone while she stared at it in her hand.
“He’s heading one of the biggest revitalization projects in town. Not just the skyscraper he’s working on but several other projects after this one ends. I tried to get on every one of them but lost the bid. Why do you think he wants to meet with me?”
“I don’t know—.”
“Do you think he’s after the portal?”
“There’s only one way to find out, but I don’t think it relates to the portal.”
“I have to get ready.” She left the room and returned immediately walking to his side of the bed to kiss him. “I didn’t tell you I love you, but I do.”
She left and came back. “Should I go? My crew already has a project they are working on.”
Her green eyes were cloudy as she went through all the pros and cons.
“You should go.” She nodded and walked out.
He placed his hand on his chest that ache wouldn’t go away.
They walked into the kitchen to find the cooking channel on. Jabari was preparing to make french toast. There were sausages frying.
“You’re cooking?”
“Un huh, I’m making breakfast before we leave for town.”
“We?”
“All of us,” Thrice told her.
This was family. She loved her little family, but sometimes she wished she had brothers and sisters now her wish was happening. She ignored that she had put on her best shirt with her nicest jeans and went to the stove to help.
Together they got breakfast done and ate. Before she knew it, they were entering downtown. They were in three vehicles again making themselves a more diverse target.
Mekhi pulled up to the frame of the building being built.
“This will be the smartest building in town when it’s finished.” Quinn craned her head to see the top floor. “Several more stories need to be added before they go to the next stage of building.”
Mekhi came around and opened the door for her. Jim O’Connell watched as Mekhi helped her out of the truck. She threw him a smile and a wave not caring what he thought.
They walked over while the brothers stood back.
“Hi Mr. O’Connell, I’m Quinn Connor it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“Likewise, Ms. Connor.” He turned his head to look at Mekhi.
“This is my fiancé. Mekhi meet Mr. O’Connell.”
“Nice to meet you son.” He gave him a smile.
“You also.”
“Ms. Connor—.”
“Please, call me Quinn.”
“You can call me Jim. Quinn, would you mind touring the site with me? I’d like to talk to you about some of the open positions I have.”
“It sounds like something I might be interested in.” She turned to look at Mekhi. “I’ll be back.”
“Take your time I’ll wait.”
She smiled at him before she followed Jim.
“Where are they going?” Slade asked.
“He wants to show her around. I think he wants to hire her.”
“Only if he pays her what she’s worth,” Phoenix said suppressing a growl.
The other brothers nodded.
“Did you catch any of those signs when we were coming in?” Akron asked.
“I did. Quinn confirmed this will be the smartest building that has been erected.”
“How do you think the humans went from this to the world we saw in their future?” Thrice said.
“War,” Jabari told them. “There is always a war.”
“There she is.” Phoenix was looking up.
Quinn was standing on a platform at the top of the building with Jim. There was a second platform that held others.
“I don’t like this,” Mekhi said his voice shaken.
“I agree, let’s get her down.” Before Slade could move the platform tilted dropping them. Then the second platform tilted.
“This can’t be happening,” Phoenix said.
The brothers were trying to move but couldn’t. Mekhi was focused on the platform and the people that were falling.
He caught and held them with his mind. He measured his breathing, all he had to do was right the platform and reverse the fall. Maybe it would be easier just to bring them to Earth.
He was lowering them when he felt it. A blade made of fire pierced him making his control shake. He stopped holding everyone stable as he tried to figure out what was happening. Turning his head, he looked around but couldn’t see anything. He noticed that nothing was moving. It felt like he was in a bubble. Everyone was frozen in their last actions even his brothers.
Memories long buried from the day his biological brothers died were coming back to haunt him. This was a replay of that day.
“I’m so glad you remember.” A voice spoke even though it knew his victim wouldn’t be able to hear him.
“Does this seem familiar? It was the day I broke you. Choosing between your brothers and the females cut you to your core. Your pain and agony tasted delightful.” He raised his knife and cut through Mekhi’s back.
There was no blood. The knife glowed a dark color, and the reaper fed off it.
“I love the taste of your misery. Who will die now? Will you allow your little warrior to fall to the ground? Her body broken and bruised because it was how the Scientists trained you? The hatred you will carry inside of you, more for me to feed on. Or will you go against your training and allow the others to die? Every time you look into your mate’s eyes, you will know that you are not worthy of her. I love your self-loathing.”
“Mekhi.” A gentle hand stroked his mind.
“I can’t choose.”
“You don’t have to.”
“Don’t ask me to let you die.”
“I can’t, I won’t. There is no choice you will save us all. I believe in you.”
The pain in his body increased. It felt like a part of him was being drained. He could feel himself becoming weaker with each minute he wasted.
There was a whisper that told him to stop resisting and let someone die. He ignored it and concentrated on the gentle presence that soothed not only his mind but the soul he didn’t have.
Closing his eyes, he resisted the pressure he felt pulling at him. He worked, his body shaking with the strain, until the people, he was holding moved toward the platform area again. Then he righted both platforms and hovered them over until he could set them down without letting them fall. He looked upward, but all he could see was the proud smile on Quinn’s lips.
His hand moved to his chest. He knew why it hurt.
&
nbsp; “What the hell happened?” Slade demanded able to move again.
“I don’t know, but we will have to talk about it.” He was staring at the opening of the building watching for Quinn. She ran out and jumped into his arms.
“You did it.” She kissed him.
“I love you. I didn’t know what love was until I saw you plunging through the air. Then I knew that I’ve loved you since I heard your voice on the phone.”
“I knew you loved me.” She leaned back and laughed bringing joy to those around her. “I have something for you.”
He put her down, and she reached into her back pocket and brought out a small black gem. It was two lightning bolts together.
“The minute I saw this, I knew it was yours.” She saw it in the Aba vault. It whispered to her telling her it belonged to Mekhi.
“This was stolen from me a long time ago. My oldest biological brother gave it to me. He said one day it would become a part of me.”
Quinn took it and placed it against his neck. His body absorbed the gem. The lightning bolt glowed on his skin.
“What does it mean?”
“Power. He used to say I was more powerful than I realized, and one day I would see the truth in his words.”
She wiped a tear away and hugged him again.
“I love you, tiny warrior.” He didn’t know what life would bring, but they would deal with it together.
There was a roar of anger they couldn’t hear. He would kill them both right now.
“Don’t.”
He turned around to find a male sitting idly in a chair.
“I know who you are.”
“Then this should be easy. He has passed the test and survived. You are no longer to pursue him.”
“You don’t have that kind of power.”
The male in the chair took a deep breath. “You said you knew who I was.”
He lifted a hand and blew on his palm. A picture danced around the space.
“I’ll kill the others,” he screamed.
“There are others? Mekhi and Quinn are off limits.”
The male disappeared leaving the reaper screaming to the sky.
