“I promise,” I murmured, feeling a weight lift from my stomach. I crushed the file to my chest and vowed to do as she said—to not think about murderers, The Hex Files, death and despair of any sort. At least until the new year.
I walked Evelyn downstairs, watching as she reclaimed Woofie and waved a hand in greeting at everyone. Then I walked her outside and, in a whirl of glittering snowflakes and a yip of the Santa Claus pup, Evelyn disappeared in a gleaming flash of white.
I turned toward the house, glanced down at the file burning in my hands.
I made my way over to the chair and slipped in next to Matthew.
“What do you have there?” he asked as I tucked the file beneath my mother’s gift to Primrose.
“I’ll tell you later,” I said with a real smile and a nod at the mistletoe that had appeared above us on a charm from Willa. “Tonight, let’s celebrate.”
