A dark stain spread from Rizzo’s crotch, trailing down his leg to the rug. Damnit. Pitch turned with a harsh sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose.

The boy squeaked. “Okay. Okay, I’ll tell you. They went to an island off the coast, a place called Devil’s Haunting.”

  “Why?”

  “To bring it to him.”

  “What?”

  “The shipment of Juice.”

  “Which?”

The boy swallowed hard. “Aggression? Anger, Rage, the kinda stuff that makes Berserkers.”

Pitch nodded. He ran a hand along his jaw and walked towards the boy. Once more, he tilted the chair back, ignoring the foul smell assaulting his senses. “All right. I’ll let you go. But you remember to tell your employers three things, eh?”

He held up fingers to make certain the boy remembered. “One, stealing from me is a bad idea. Two, I will get back what they stole, with interest. And three? Three, you tell Malachi that I am coming for him.”

The door to the study opened, and one of Pitch’s Cat Shifter assassins barged in. “Sir? Call for you.”

“Good.” Pitch let the chair hit the floor again. “Sew Rizzo’s mouth and eyes shut.”

Pitch walked away as the boy screamed. The assassin followed. Two Trolls stepped into the office in Pitch’s wake, closing the door behind them.

“Is that wise, sir? The boy will need his mouth to tell Malachi what you said.”

“I can assure you, the stitches will be out of the boy’s mouth before he reaches Malachi.”

“Sir.” The tone of the Cat Shifter’s voice made Pitch hesitate. “She said to tell you that what you’re doing is malicious and unworthy of your station.”

Pitch growled. “That woman will turn me into a good man. Tell them to just break a couple fingers and send him on his way then.”

“Is it a bad thing she’s making you better?” The glinting, fanged smile of the assassin suggested he was teasing.

  “Oh shut up, Lawrence.”

  “As it pleases you, sir.”

  “Stuff it!”

Lawrence’s chuckles echoed behind Pitch as he wandered out to the balcony overlooking his club. Dancing patrons ground against one another in a mass of flesh. Every kind of creature could be found there. They were all hopped up on Juice, drugs, or magic. But these were his subjects.

The addicted. The unwanted. The very bottom of society that dared to say they disagreed with humanity.

He pulled another cigar from his pocket and lit it. Inhaling deeply was the only way he was going to remain calm. The darkness inside of him wanted to hear the boy’s screams.

A warm white light crept over him. He couldn’t see it, but he could feel it in every pore of his body. And, as it had every time before, it made his heart ache.

“Everything’s coming together,” he told it. The smoke he exhaled turned from red to a soothing sky blue. “Only a little while longer, my love.”
