Taking a sip of the wine, he handed it back to his wife as she resumed her seat and kicked his legs out under the table, crossing them at the ankles. He said something, but the lighting was too soft for me to read it. Looking back at Gearden, my smile faded from the dangerous look he wore.
“What is it?” I asked him.
Taking his time, he met my gaze. “The Crearer are on their way.”
My breath kind of whooshed out of me. I knew they were coming; he’d told me they would be contacted for AJ and Derek’s judgement. But I also knew what no one wanted to say, that I’d also killed one of our own and it wasn’t exactly in self-defense. Nor was it in a formal challenge. There were also no witnesses save a prisoner we kept locked up somewhere on the property. I’d have to tell them my story, all of it. And I wasn’t sure I was ready.
