I wasn’t sure if Matthew had complained about the security during our trip home, or if there was something else that was bothering Clint. But I certainly was going to listen in to their conversation and try to figure out why he was so angry.
“You told us to back off Matthew. It was your idea. You can’t then go and complain because the security sucked at your wedding.”
“I can do whatever I damn well please,” Matthew said.
I knew that Matthew was right. I used to think that it wasn’t true and that Matthew needed to follow the rules just like everyone else. But the last few months had taught me one really good lesson; Matthew was above the rules. He seemed to be able to make himself into a winner no matter what the situation was.
I cringed at the idea of Clint picking a fight with Matthew. I knew that the result was going to be Clint losing his job with us; possible he would lose his job altogether. Matthew was too strong to be messed with. There was nothing in his way anymore, I silently urged Clint to back down; although I knew he wouldn’t hear my thoughtful prayers I sent to him.
“You’re not above the law Mr. Strom. I’m not sure what it is you’re trying to do by making the secret service look bad, but I’m not going to stand for it.”
“Do what you have to do,” Matthew said in an unusually calm voice.
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“Well, Clint, I think maybe it’s time for you to move on. Perhaps keeping one of the retired Presidents safe would be a better job for you.”
I heard the calm threatening tone in Matthew’s voice and knew that Clint didn’t have a chance. For whatever reason, Matthew had decided that Clint wasn’t going to be working for us anymore.
I couldn’t quite understand what they were arguing about though. It sounded like Matthew had called off the security team and Clint felt like that was why the photographer had gotten into the wedding. But it seemed like there was much more going on and I just hadn’t heard all the details yet.
“I’ve worked this detail for ten years. Don’t threaten me Matthew. I know what you’re doing. I’m not going to let you go through with it. I’ve got a lot more information than you’d ever want to know. Don’t make yourself out to be the saint here.”
Oh, I liked Clint for his efforts in standing up to Matthew, but he clearly didn’t know who he was dealing with. Matthew wasn’t going to let anyone threaten him. Whatever information Clint had on Matthew was probably just the tip of the iceberg and Matthew had a way of sinking icebergs before they became issues.
“Clint, I think you’re mistaking what I’m saying. There is no threat toward you. I simply am suggesting that you move on. If my techniques are too much for your delicate system, then you shouldn’t continue to work for me.”
Again Matthew was freakishly calm and I heard Clint slam the door as he left without even responding to Matthew. I didn’t dare move though, I didn’t want Matthew to know I had been listening to the whole conversation. Instead, I waited as Matthew called for the other agents to come upstairs.
“Get up here, all of you,” I heard him yell down the opening to the basement. “Just to be clear, I’m in charge here. If I give an order that you all don’t like, just suck it up and do it. If that is too much for you then I invite you to change posts. This isn’t going to be pretty. I’m not a nice guy. I do horrible things and I’m going to expect you to do them with me. If you got into this job to be heroes then I’ll give you a fight worth fighting. But if you got into this job to follow rules and abide by some oath that means nothing in a life or death situations; leave. I don’t have time for you.”
None of the secret service officers said a word. The silence was palpable until Matthew sent them back downstairs to continue their work.
The noise from them moving down the stairs was just the cover I needed to hurry into the bedroom and slide under the covers. I turned the light off and closed my eyes as I heard Matthew coming up the stairs.
I was interested to see if he would share with me the details of his conversation. We had talked about how I wanted to be involved in all the decisions that had anything to do with me. I wasn’t exactly sure if this fit that criteria, but I couldn’t wait to see how honest Matthew was going to be with me; now that we were husband and wife.
The door opened slowly and I waited for Matthew to come to me. He didn’t. Instead I heard him at the foot of the bed.
“Sorry for yelling at them like that on our first full day of wedded bliss,” Matthew said as I looked up at him and saw he was taking off his clothes.
“I trust that they deserved it,” I said softly. “What did Clint do?”
Matthew was silent as he grabbed the covers and pulled them off of me to expose my naked body. His eyes were wild with desire as he crawled onto the bed and moved slowly up my body toward me. Each inch was filled with tension and desire as I felt his hands graze against my skin.
“They started a revolt.”
“A revolt. Are we at war?” I laughed as Matthew made it on top of me and pressed his body down on me.
He smiled at me and let his fingers play with my hair. His face looked so gentle and loving, yet I could feel his heart pounding with adrenaline from the argument he had just had.
“Yes. It’s a war. Everyone is against us. We can’t trust anyone but each other.”
“Then tell me the truth. What did Clint do that was so bad?”
Matthew pressed his body against mine and slowly thrust into me as our eyes locked together. I pulled his lips to mine and let them mingle with each other as his thrusts came harder and harder. I still wanted to know what Clint had done, but I was going to play Matthew’s game of passion with him.
My arms wrapped around him as I held his body close to mine and took him inside of me hard and deep. It was impossible not to moan out in pleasure as our bodies moved together, but I still wanted to know. I needed to know. Our marriage was going to be one of equality and that meant that Matthew was going to do as he promised and share his life with me.
“Tell me,” I urged him.
Matthew waited and then stopped his thrusts as he answered me.
“He didn’t trust me.”
“Did you trust him?”
“No.”
“Do you trust me?” I asked Matthew as I held onto him.
“Yes.”
“Then tell me the truth. Why did you want him gone?”
His eyes looked glaringly at me as Matthew tried to decide whether he was really going to tell me or not. I smiled up at him to reassure him that I could handle whatever it was that he was going to say.
“He was too honest.”
