Untouchable Witch: An Urban Fantasy Action Adventure (School of Necessary Magic Raine Campbell Book 7) Page 19

by Judith Berens

She chuckled. “No, I don’t think I can.”

“You only have one more year to get into trouble at our school. Make the best of it.” Professor Hudson lowered her hand. “We’ll see you soon, Raine. Enjoy the last few weeks of your summer.”

  “Thank you, Professor, I will.”

Raine walked back toward the others and grinned. She would make the best of it. Uncle Jerry had already agreed to let Cameron spend the last weeks of summer at their house.

Summer might be ending, but the story is far from over. Raine’s adventure continues in Probationary Agent.

Make Your Own Mountain – it’s a favorite saying of Michael Anderle’s and for a long time I didn’t really pay full attention to it. I was too busy climbing whatever mountain was in front of me. Besides, what does ‘make your own mountain’ even mean?

  I can’t make a mountain, can I?

But then success came, and I was able to lift my head and look around a little and even more interesting, I had choices to make. All good choices no less – but I still had to choose. Imagine if you’re from a long line of hardworking people who did their best, went to a job, paid their bills, raised their kids, took vacations, went to family reunions, celebrated holidays, basically had a good life and then passed on to the next.

That’s the storyline for generations behind me.

Now, what if you suddenly could pause, not work quite as hard, take more vacations, travel in style, live where you want and design your life – not just make the most out of what you have. That is suddenly me.

I heard the phrase again and in a flash, I got what he meant. Make Your Own Mountain means Make Your Own Dream, not someone else’s. If you’re striving for more because others have more, you haven’t asked the right question yet. If you’re dieting and exercising to get down to a certain size because that’s what others say looks good, wrong question. (By the way, I’ve done both of those)

If you’re doing anything because you’re competing with yourself or others, the most important and powerful question is still missing.

What do you want? Answer that one and keep walking toward the answer and your own mountain will appear. That’s the one to climb – but first you have to create it. Took me forever to have the courage to even ask myself the question, let alone wait for the answer. If someone asked, what do you want to do, I was more likely to answer with – I don’t know, what do you want to do? Over time, I no longer knew, which means I didn’t know myself.

Fortunately, I cut that out and started putting the pieces of my mountain together till one day I reached this peak of the very old mountain that was always right in front of me. So, I suppose this is part two and sometimes you have to create another mountain. Look at that – a mountain range in all new territory.

It’s going to take a little time and some trust in the universe and in myself to ask the question again and wait for entirely new answers. If I’m not trying to make sure the basics are covered, if I have time to do other things – What do I want to do?

The first answer was to write The Peabrain Adventures – and frankly, to keep that name. You have to read the series to get why it matters to much. It’s part of my new mountain – maybe the foothills or the first camp. The next may be to travel more – there’s a lot in the US I’ve never seen. I’ve already got a trip planned to see Niagara Falls. Why not? And I keep adding places to the list. Santa Fe, Napa Valley, Glacier National Park (and glamping – it’s a thing).

This is the beginning of the last great journey of my life. My last mountain. Definitely worthy of a few moments to answer that powerful question – what do I want? Stay tuned…

  More adventures to follow.

THANK YOU for not only reading this story but these Author Notes as well.

(I think I’ve been good with always opening with “thank you.” If not, I need to edit the other Author Notes!)

  RANDOM (sometimes) THOUGHTS?

  The awesome of Indie Publishing.

Travel… It’s ‘mostly’ awesome except when it isn’t (fiery plane crashes anyone?)

We travel a lot for publishing (you don’t have to, it is a strategic decision on my part to put LMBPN at all four of the major Book Fairs each year.) However, I can’t say that having two plane crashes in the last few days has made me feel any safer about the trip part.

I’m REALLY ready for the transporter ‘beam me to Beijing Scotty’ option.

Only problem is I lose the reading time. I can be guaranteed that during take off and landing the only option I have to work is to read.

(Shhh, don’t mention that I can type on my phone, give an older man a break, please?)

Oh yeahhhh… I know I look younger than my 51 years, but I’m going to start milking my age for all the benefits.

Like, napping because I’m over 50 (not because I stayed up until 4:30 reading that latest book last night… Stupid thing was LOOOONG and I wanted to see what happened to the characters.)

Or saying I have wisdom because of the gray hairs on my head. I know the hair is strictly because of my age, but I’m using that explanation forever.

Back to flying and travel, I digressed.

Essentially, I’m flying on purpose to build the company and help other indie authors around the world. So, I’m taking the risk. I suspect in another couple of years, I’ll dial back on the travel (last time to Australia for at least a couple of years or longer.)

I’m happy to say I did an around the world trip (this summer) but man, I don’t want to plan one again anytime soon.

Unless I get one of those apartment type rooms I hear about.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS

One of the interesting (at least to me) aspects of my life is the ability to work from anywhere and at any time. In the future, I hope to re-read my own Author Notes and remember my life as a diary entry.

Cave in the Sky (™) Las Vegas, Nevada

It’s starting to get warm here in Las Vegas and I figure the painful part of living in a desert is going to come too soon.

Personally, I wonder if in the future I’ll re-read these author notes and still have this condo, or will we have sold it because of the weather?

  Only time will tell.
