“I would...like that,” Caleb told Abigail, dropped down to his knees, put his hands over his face, and began crying. “I would like that very much…very much...”
“This was never on Perry Mason,” Betty said in a sad voice.
“Indeed not,” Martha agreed and let out a heavy sigh.
“But there is a happy ending,” Sara promised and softly kissed Abigail on her cheek. “We'll be around,” she promised and then turned to Conrad, Amanda and Pete. “Who wants to take a walk on the beach?”
Conrad took Sarah's hand, gave her a kiss, and said, “I do.”
“You two go ahead,” Pete said, “I want to stand here and finish my cigar.”
“Yeah, go on,” Amanda smiled and shooed Sarah and Conrad away, “go be love birds.”
Conrad gave Amanda a grateful smile and walked his wife down onto the warm, bright sand of the beach. Sarah looked back over her shoulder, saw Amanda and Pete standing next to a man crying on his knees and an old woman gently touching her son's shoulder, and smiled. “Is this for real?” she asked Conrad, “or am I dreaming? Is...evil going to jump out at me at any second and ruin this moment?” She thought of the spectral snowman who seemed to haunt her thoughts amidst the worst cases, but at the moment, those visions seemed as far away as the moon.
Conrad stopped walking, took Sarah into his arms, held her tight, and whispered, “This is real. Our story is forever,” he promised. “And if that snowman comes back, we'll fight it together as one.”
“One heart,” Sarah said, placing her hand over Conrad’s heart with a smile. And with those words, Sarah smiled and whispered “The End” to a truly strange case that had luckily ended with finding real gold instead of fool’s gold.
