Chapter 38
Josh
“I had a meeting with some agents and editors of fashion magazines a week ago,” Matthew said. “Collaboratively, we decided to run a contest only for our models. In the Sexiest Man Alive, you were competing with actors, but this time it would only be for the models. We plan to do this annually.” He pointed one finger in the air. “One, to increase our sales.” Then he pointed another. “Two, to help promote the models.” He pointed the third finger. “Just because it was my brilliant idea.” He chuckled. “So what do you think?”
“Awesome.” I cheered.
“I already hold the sexiest man title,” Nathan threw in. “I don’t think I should run.”
“I’m glad you brought that up, Nathan. Unfortunately, you won’t be in the running. I’ve asked you to come for another project I planned for you and Josh.”
Nathan nodded in understanding.
“Is it gender specific?” I asked.
Matthew lifted an eyebrow with a sigh. “Yes. Since women do the most voting, we’re running a test with the male models first. If it’s successful, we’ll do one for the female models. The candidates will be chosen by the fashion magazine editors, and then the people will vote. We haven’t announced it yet, so please keep this to yourself.”
“Of course,” Nathan and I said at the same time. I felt honored that Matthew Knight trusted me with private information.
Matthew leaned back and glanced between Nathan and me with a mischievous grin. “So, how would you both like to go to Hawaii and do M. Knight men’s summer shoot. Of course your flight and hotel would be paid for.”
Nathan and I exchanged glances with huge grins. I didn’t have to think about it.
“I’m in,” I answered without any hesitation.
“Me too,” Nathan replied. “Oh, wait.” His tone deflated. “It would depend on Troy’s trial. I need to be here for Olivia.”
Fuck Troy. He’s one crazy fucked up dude. I wished my friends didn’t have to deal with him. Troy had made bail. They should never let people like him out of jail no matter how much money he had. He deserved every second of the time in jail.
“We’ll work around it. I hope it will be a fast one, and the jury finds him guilty. Men like him give a bad name to our industry, let alone men in general. I’ve already spoken to both of your agents, so you’ll hear from them shortly about this Hawaii project. I’m also currently speaking to Olivia’s agent. The women’s line will be shooting there as well.”
Nathan’s eyes sparkled. “That would be perfect. Thank you.”
After the meeting, Nathan and I went separate ways. He had errands to run, so I decided to head home. I was happy for Nathan. Olivia would join him, but as much as I wanted to ask if Isla had been chosen as well, I didn’t. I didn’t want to make a big deal. It would seem too forward of me, and it was none of my business. But that was the problem. Isla had become my business.
Thoughts of us being more than just friends had crossed my mind many times before, but she wasn’t the kind of girl I could dump and forget. I needed her in my life. She was my best friend. If things went wrong, not only would I lose her, but our party of four would become nonexistent. Come to think of it, I’m glad I hadn’t started anything with her. But what the hell was I thinking when I told her I had a spare room? Living in the same house would complicate things. I almost wished I hadn’t, but so far Isla and I had done well. I had pushed away the thought of having more with her when I received an email from a private detective.
I pulled up into the drive, killed the ignition, scrolled through my emails on my phone, and clicked on the email I had been reading daily ever since two weeks ago when I had gotten it. It took me two years to decide to search for her. And now that I knew where she lived, my determination faltered, and I didn’t know what to do anymore. What do I do?
I gripped the wheel until my knuckles whitened. Dipping my head down, I groaned out loud in frustration. No harm in looking to see where she lived. Raking my hair back, I released a long sigh. Then before I could change my mind, I punched in her address on the navigation and took off.

International Bestselling, Award Winning, Author Mary Ting resides in Southern California with her husband and two children. She enjoys oil painting and making jewelry. Writing her first novel in the Crossroads Saga happened by chance. It was a way to grieve the death of her beloved grandmother, and she became inspired by a dream she once had as a young girl. When she started reading new adult novels, she fell in love with the genre. It was the reason she had to write one, and from there Something Great was created.
