Surviving one more day turned into surviving just one more week, then one more month, then one more year.
But the two boys did not give up. They began to strive, they began to pick themselves up faster, they did not hit the bottom as hard, or as often. Slowly the tide turned, slowly the pain and torture of their training turned into a source of power, it nourished them. Their combat abilities rose, their intellect rose, their understanding of the world around them rose.
And then one day, they did not break. This was the day The Bell spoke to them as more than just students.
“You have both progressed to my satisfaction. You came to this place boys, you are now men. You came here weak, you are now strong. You came here as simpletons, you are now wise. You are halfway done with your training. I hope you enjoyed the past five years, because the next five will be something altogether different.”
For the next five years Ajani and Banga accompanied The Bell and his elite squad, the ZCS-123, on operations all over the world. The two boys were the lowest ranking members in the group, and were taught by and learned from the nameless members of the ZCS squad. Each man had a numerical designation within the group, only The Bell had a name. The two boys fought and killed and lived and learned for five years. They lost track of the missions, of the killings, of the destruction they caused.
From Africa to SE Asia to Central America, they fought against seemingly overwhelming opposition and odds, yet not a single member of the squad was ever lost. The boys abilities grew and grew, and they noticed a subtle attitude of respect from the ZCS as they undertook more and more clandestine operations.
Then, one day, The Bell took them aside, away from the group. He looked upon them not unlike a proud father, one who would never let his ‘children’ know he was proud outside of a small nod of the head.
“Ten years ago I made you both a promise, that if you came with me I would make something special out of you. I have fulfilled that promise. You have met my expectations, and I am honest enough to admit you exceeded them in most aspects. Your training is over, you will never fight with the ZCS again. It is almost time for you to be on your own.”
“On our own?”
“What do you mean, our training is over?”
“I mean you have learned all you can from me. The rest is up to you, whether you succeed or fail is now on your shoulders. You have one week to do as you please, take these envelopes, each of you, you will find what you need in them. Some advice, do NOT be late, you only get once chance.”
Banga smiled to himself. The envelopes contained an address in Tirana, the capital of Albania, and two first class airline tickets along with two ATM cards and passport for them both. The boys took the week to relax, enjoy France, and at the designated time, they flew to Albania.
They were not late.
“Brother, it is apparently time,” Ajani spoke as he opened the door to the balcony.
Banga smiled.
“Yes, it is.”

Whatever name its members referred to it as, in truth it had no official name. Perhaps at one time it did, but that name was lost in the void of history. Lost in time were its true origins as well, because no history was ever kept except through oral tradition. What WAS known was that sometime in the distant past, someone had decided that the world was a giant playground, and that only a few specific people should get to play in it. Over the centuries uncounted, its membership rose and its power consolidated. People interested in wealth and public displays of power were not brought in. In fact, these people were silently helped along as to mask the true power behind the world façade. The Kennedys, the Rothschilds, the Quandts, The Royal Family of England, they were all mere window dressing, put in place for the sole reason as to divert eyes away from those who were really in power.
And THOSE people did not reside in castles or mansions or on private islands. For the most part they lived humbly, quietly, often in seclusion. To them, the point of having power was not to flaunt it, but to use it in stealth, in secret, and for a purpose.
They could have stopped every war ever waged, but they chose not to. Every catastrophe in human history: from the sacking of Constantinople to the Titanic to the Holocaust to 9-11, they could have stopped. But they chose to let the world turn on its own, only nudging here or there, but never outright interference.
They built their wealth, which was incalculable, their power, which was God-like, behind the scenes, content in what they had created. They divided the world up into zones, giving each member free reign in their respective area to do what they please. There were grey zones on the planet, the most important one being the USA, which they nurtured into existence for the sole purpose of becoming an area where every member could have free reign. They met once a year to induct new members or to mourn the passing of old ones. They would also meet in cases of extreme emergency, but that had only happened three times in their history, with a fourth yet to come.
They had a code of ethics, which stated no member could target another without permission from the others, and then only for specific crimes committed against the group itself. This rule was to be violated later in one extraordinarily specific circumstance.
For now, two new members were to be welcomed in: Banga and Ajani, who had been recruited in and accepted under the circumstances in which they replenished their numbers. They had proven themselves worthy and capable, and now took their place at the table of Gods.
