Heart of Clay (The Tanner Series Book 6) Page 23

by Jo Willow

Her thoughts were interrupted by a tap on her window. She jumped and swung her head around to find him smiling at her. He opened her car door and offered her his hand. She took it and started to get out, completely forgetting just how short her skirt was. Even in the deep shade and relative privacy of her driveway, he was given a glimpse of her thong as her dress rode up to her hips when she attempted to get out of the car.

His grip tightened and he shut the car door. Before she could adjust her dress, he pushed himself against her, pinning her to the car with his body. His hands went to her bare backside and he squeezed and lifted her roughly while he pushed again. Her hands were on his shoulders pushing him, but his lips were against her neck.

  “Invite me in Marla.”

  “I don’t think that’s a good idea Brian. I hardly know you.”

“I have a feeling that didn’t stop you with Tanner, all I want is my turn.”

  “Your turn? You arrogant prick!”

She slapped him hard and saw him change. He shoved her dress up to her waist and snapped her thong like it was nothing but a piece of string. She started getting nervous. They were standing in her driveway. The streetview was completely blocked by his truck, the hedges blocked the view from anywhere else. She could scream, but she was afraid he’d shut her up.

“Brian, we’re in the fucking driveway. Knock it off and behave your damned self.”

Brian didn’t take to being slapped by a tease and her admonishment of him made him even more determined. He watched her eyes widen when she felt him free himself. He felt her tremble in earnest when she felt him slide against her. Her hands flew to his arms when he grabbed her bottom and lifted her slightly.

  “Brian... please...”

  “You got it baby.”

He pushed in fast and hard and it was a tight fit. He made tight circles with his hips, trying to loosen her up and she whimpered from pain. He was too big and she was nowhere close to ready. Nothing prepared her for this and then he started to move.

“Damn Marla, you’re tight baby, raise your leg.”

“Brian, I don’t want this. It’s too much, please go.”

He pulled the front of her dress down to her waist, completely exposing her. His mouth clamped on to her breast and his tongue made her gasp. Her hips moved involuntarily and she moaned from the discomfort. He pulled her leg up to his waist and shoved in even deeper, making her cry out. Afraid of being interrupted, his mouth came down on hers and he started thrusting hard and fast. She yipped and whimpered and he caught each one and growled. He reached for her other leg and she held on to his shoulders, praying for a quick ending to the pain.

He changed positions slightly and she started panting, abandoning the whimpers for moans. The delicious friction hit her and she tightened her legs around his waist, and found herself begging him not to stop.

He smiled against her neck and started moving faster, the car rocked with each thrust. When he felt her tighten and stiffen in his arms, he cursed and shoved one last time.

She felt him emptying himself over and over, his movements slowing but continuing. When he was finished, he released her legs and she slid to the ground. Her legs were sticky and wet and her dress was bunched at her waist. She caught a glimpse of him as he stepped back and her eyes grew huge. When she heard him snicker, she blushed and looked him in the eye.

“Beth was always reluctant at first too. You’ll get used to it.”

She scrambled with her dress, shoving it back up her arms and pulling it down to a respectable length. She’d already planned to throw it away once she got inside.

“I’ll never get used to being raped in my driveway Brian. Get the fuck off my property and don’t come back.”

She glared at him as she sauntered past, wanting a hot shower and an aspirin in the world’s worst way. She assumed he’d left since she’d made her intentions clear.

Marla put her key in the lock and was turning the doorknob when she felt his arm around her waist. Then she was off the ground. She grabbed at his arm, digging her nails in hoping to be released. He opened the front door and carried her inside as if she weighed nothing. He closed and locked the door before he used his free hand to push her dress up again. He repositioned her in front of him and wrapped both arms around her, holding her in place. His lips were close to her ear and he nibbled on her earlobe.

“I don’t think it’s rape if you’re moaning my name and moving against me Marla. I don’t care where we are. You’ve never felt anything like that have you baby?”

“Brian let go of me, please. I don’t want this. You’ve had your fun, now leave and I won’t bother you again.”

“I’m already bothered again and I’m pretty sure I’ll be bothered all night. You think you can just tease and play with me and I’ll walk away frustrated?”

His hands were moving over her body, making her skin hot and her breathing erratic. He pushed her dress off her shoulders again and continued pushing until it was pooled on the floor and she stood against him naked. He wrapped one arm around her waist and one around her hips and lifted her, kicking the dress out of the way.

“Kick your shoes off baby. Tell me where you sleep.”

“If you don’t turn me loose right now, I swear I’m calling the police. Let me go Brian.”

“Think about that Marla. You invited me out twice, both times trying to get me to help you trap a Tanner. One of the most influential families in the state, and you’re plotting with me, to derail one of them. How do you think that’ll play out in court? I wonder if Mitch or Beth would have anything interesting to say if they were called to the stand, eh?”

Marla felt the trap shut and she closed her eyes. She began to wonder if she’d ever been in control of this situation at all. She started to cry and went limp in his arms.

“There’s my good girl. It’ll only be one night sweetheart, I promise. You’ll enjoy it. I promise that too. Now where do you sleep?”

Marla stepped out of her shoes and started forward, Brian kept his hand clamped on her hip.

She moved down a short, darkened hallway, the night had finally arrived and the house was unlit. She stopped in front of a closed door and turned to face him. She put her hands on the side of his face and pulled him down for a kiss. He pressed her against her bedroom door and ravaged her mouth until she squirmed and reached for his fly. He groaned and pressed against her hand and she smiled. This she knew she could control.

“Are you sure you want this Brian? Are you sure you can handle it?”

“Sweetheart if you want it, I can handle it. Try me.”

She led him into her bedroom with a smile on her face.

  Chapter Sixteen

“Hey, there’s the hat shop! Come on Scott.”

They’d just walked through the gate and Phil was leading Scott away from the group. Rose raised her voice and everyone stopped.

  “Hold it! Nobody move!”

Phil took his cue from Scott who was moving closer to Rose.

  “Ma’am?”

Rose patted his shoulder and smiled. She handed him a roll of bills and his eyes got huge.

“Scott, can you keep track of money? Do you know how to make change?”

“Yes ma’am. But I can’t take this, it wouldn’t be right.”

“Of course you’ll take it. You’re going to want to get your mom and dad something and you’ll need lunch money. If Phil gets away from you, we’re going clockwise around the park.”

She strapped a fanny pack around his waist and tightened it.

  “Is it too tight?”

  “No ma’am.”

“Good. Now listen. There’s a bottle of water, a map of this place, and my cell phone in there. Can you use a cell phone?”

  “Yes. I use mama’s.”

“Good. Take pictures and we’ll download them when we get back to the house. Try not to get it wet or lose it. If you find yourself alone, try to figure out where you are and call Ian. We’ll come get you.
Meet us back here at six o’clock, and we’ll make dinner plans then. Keep your money in your pocket in case someone steals your pack. Got all that?”

Scott hugged Rose hard around the waist and she leaned over and kissed him on the top of his head.

“Now go have a good time and try to keep track of Phil.”

Phil was bouncing on the balls of his feet, impatiently waiting for Scott to be released from the seemingly endless instructional pep talk. When the boy turned around and grinned at him, Phil took off running with Scott close behind.

Amber shifted Alex to her other hip and tugged on Ian’s shirt. He looked up from studying a map that rivaled the original map of the world, and raised his eyebrows in question.

“Is there a Disney prison on that map anywhere?”

“Disney Prison? Where would that attraction be? Frontierland? Maybe Liberty Square?”

“I’d look out back behind the park if I were you. We’re gonna need a rough idea of what it costs to bail out an idiot and his eight-year-old accomplice.”

“Amber, they’ll be fine. He’ll eat everything in sight and ride everything Scott’s allowed on. Just be glad he’s not pissing on our parade. Let’s go find some mouse ears, princess dresses and something cold to drink. What do you say Patty?”

She reached up and Ian lifted her easily. She put her hand to his ear and began to whisper. He smiled at her and kissed her on the cheek.

“Thank-you sweetheart. Just for that, I’ll buy you jewelry to go with your new dress.”

Rose sidled up to him holding Jem.

  “What did she say?”

  “Tell her Pattycake. It’s alright.”

“You’re wrong Aunt Rose. Uncle Ian is not an asshole.”

Rose rolled her eyes and patted his arm.

“That’s it Ian. Teach her to compliment men for jewelry. Girls can’t learn that lesson quick enough I reckon.”

Rose and Amber walked off with their children and Ian smiled at Patty.

“You’re my new favorite Pattycake. Stick with your Uncle Ian.”

Patty was smiling, her pretty blue eyes shining above her dimpled cheeks.

Scott and Phil were standing in line in the hot Florida sunshine. They each had a corn dog, a plate of nachos and a large drink. In between bites, Phil was getting to know his young protege better.

“So what are your career plans Scott?”

  “What?”

“What do you wanna be when you grow up?”

Scott shrugged and ate another nacho.

“I dunno. I’m only eight. I figure I’ve got time.”

“Ah see, that’s where you’re wrong my man. You can never start too young. The years fly by, trust me. I know. Before you know it, you’ll be snaking toilets with a wife and three kids, wondering how in the hell you got there. Best to plan ahead little dude.”

“What is it you do exactly Phil?”

“I supervise the running of Slow Burn Records for your Uncle Ian. He’s busy with Rose most of the time now and he trusts me to make sure the studios don’t tank.”

“I thought David ran the studio.”

“David runs the Atlanta Division and Mick runs the West Coast branch. I keep an eye on David and Mick and I’m Ian’s right hand man. I’m a computer genius you know.”

“I’ve heard that. Could you teach me stuff?”

Phil smiled smugly and took a bite of his corn dog as the line moved minutely along.

“I could teach you all kinds of stuff and I’ll be happy to do it. Ever hack into a real estate database?”

  “Not that I know of.”

“I’ll put that on the list. How long have we been standing here Scott?”

“Half an hour. We’re halfway there. We should’ve gotten the Express Pass.”

Phil narrowed his eyes at his friend.

  “What does that do?”

“You don’t wait in line for the really good rides. You get a time to come back and when you come back then, you walk right on.”

“Where do we find these Express Passes?”

“I dunno. You buy them here somewhere.”

Phil was dialing his phone with one hand while balancing his food and drink with the other arm.

  “What’s up Phil?”

“Ian, where do we buy an Express Pass?”

  “What’s that?”

“It’s a special pass that let’s you do stuff quicker. Not as many lines.”

“I dunno, just a minute. I’ll ask someone.”

Phil heard Ian’s voice and then a stranger’s voice in the background. The line moved three steps and he finished his corn dog.

“Phil, there’s a booth inside the front gate. You go up, show them your ticket and buy the pass.”

“Roger that. Have you done the teacup thing yet?”

“Nope, that’s next. The girls had to get decked out in Cinderella and Snow White gear first. Alex is Peter Pan. He’s cute.”

“Tell me you did not put my son in tights.”

“Hell no. He’s got the shirt, the sword and the little hat on. The girls are wearing crowns. I’ve got a photo of Rose and Amber in Mouse Ears with their name embroidered on ‘em.”

“Send it to me and I’ll put it on her fan page.”

“I’ll send it now. Where are you?”

“Gettin’ out of this stupid line and goin’ to get us an express pass. Me and mini-me got shit to do and we ain’t got all day to do it in. Later Bro’. Good-luck with the teacups.”

Ian was thirty feet in the air with a squealing Patty, making their elephant go up and down by pulling the bar in front of him. He had a pair of mouse ears on his head and a “Goofy Rules” t-shirt on. Rose was taking photos and he threatened her with three more children if one made it’s way to Facebook or the office. Despite all of that, he was having the time of his life.

Patty was grateful for everything and deferred to Jem and Alex when they got cranky. It opened his eyes to just how spoiled they were, and he glanced at Rose more than once, noticing that she was reaching the same conclusion. When it was time to do the Little Mermaid thing, Jem pitched a fit because Ian and Patty were in front of them and climbed into a clamshell together. Jem walked up and pulled Patty’s hair, shocking the little girl.

Patty started to climb out when she felt Ian’s arm around her, pulling her closer. He looked at his daughter and she crossed her arms, waiting.

“Jem, you go and ride with mama or Amber. I’ll ride the next one with you.”

  “You ride with ME daddy!”

  “I’m riding with Patty. Go.”

Rose retrieved Jem and led her to another clamshell while she cried and screamed the whole way. Patty looked up at Ian.

“It’s okay. Jem wants to be with her dad. I miss my dad too.”

“Would you like to send your dad some pictures Patty?”

“Could we? He misses me pretty bad when I’m not there.”

Ian smiled and hugged her close.

“I’m sure he does. I’d miss you too sweetheart. We’ll do it at lunch. Okay?”

Patty grinned and held onto the bar as the ride started to move.

They were all seated at the Liberty Town Tavern when they found out they couldn’t get beer inside the Magic Kingdom.

“You’re tellin’ me, we’re sittin’ in a tavern and can’t get a beer?”

  “You can order rootbeer sir.”

  “Is it thirty proof rootbeer?”

Rose kicked Ian under the table and he scowled at her.

“Look, I’ve spun teacups and flown inside elephants. If I see one more giant stuffed character coming towards me, I’m borrowing Alex’s sword. It’s two hundred degrees outside and I’m wearing mouse ears and a Goofy shirt. I’m living the damned Disney experience here, all I’m asking for is one beer. I bet Phil and Scott have found the magic beer stand.”

Rose looked at the flustered waitress and blushed.

“Pardon my husband. He’s a bit over-taxed at the mom
ent. We’ll have hamburgers all the way around and a large pizza. Root Beer sounds just fine. Thank-you.”

The waitress paused and studied Rose before she smiled.

“Excuse me, but are you Rose James?”

“Yes I am. We’re spending a few days here. That’s my husband Ian, the beer guzzling smart aleck and this is my family. Who might you be?”

“I’m Heather and I’m tickled to death to meet you. I can’t believe you’re here!”

“Sis’, I hang out at the Piggly Wiggly and Snyder’s in Lithia Springs too. I’m nothin’ special.”

“Nothing special? Are you for real? I hate to be an imposition, but could I get a picture?”

The nervous waitress was looking for her cell phone when Ian caught it as it fell from her skirt pocket. He smiled at her and held it up.

“You and Rose stand next to each other and I’ll take the photo.”

The two women posed with their arms around each other as the other diners began to wonder what the big deal was.

“Thank-you Rose. I’ll never forget this. I’ll go get your drinks and I’ll be right back.”

She left quickly and Rose couldn’t help but notice about a dozen set of eyes had suddenly become fascinated with her.

“I think our cover’s blown Ian.”

“It could be the mouse ears with ‘Rose’ embroidered on them. The only thing missing are the giant star-shaped sunglasses.”

“You really are an asshole, you know that?”

  “No I’m not. Ask Patty.”

Patty smiled at Ian and then at Rose.

The waitress returned with a tray that contained five root beers and one empty frosted mug. She winked at Ian and fished a can of Foster’s from her pocket.

“The boys in the back have a cooler for after work. This is really against the rules though.”

“Sis’, don’t think I don’t appreciate it. Heather, I’ll name my next daughter after you.”
