“That would be due to the fact that he went into the void between worlds for twenty to forty years, doing nothing but meditating. Constantly, the entire time. We could probably both do that too, if we tried. All right, that doesn’t explain the girlfriend part, but if you want Avery that bad, you need to step up your game. Notice how the other guy already has all that other stuff going for him? That’s hard to beat. You know, I should try that. The void thing? I probably can’t do it for that long, but it’s got to help control the cravings.”

  Eve smiled then, nodding.

“It really does. Let’s do that? Not this instant, but soon. You, too, Missy. If my people can get an edge right now, I have to try and get it for them. Avery, can you do that, if I get busy?”

She nodded. It wasn’t as if she’d never done it before at all.

“I can. Steve, we can do that tomorrow morning. Missy… I don’t think I have time until next Thursday, is that all right with you? We can try it some other time, or almost any day, if you don’t mind coming in at midnight.”

The girl grinned at her then.

“I was joking, you all know that, right? Though… Yes. Thursday. I’ll be here. Thank you, Avery.”

“No problem. Now, I need to go make a skirt. That and pick up the one that I left in the back, here.” That got a chuckle for some reason.

Not that she understood why that was.

They were under attack. Part of her wanted to run off and start fighting that moment, but she didn’t know who to go after.

Except, when she thought about it, making her way to first the pile of things that belonged to her, which were over in the corner, and then to the node, she realized something.

There, inside her head. In the new memories, she had everything she needed to start figuring the whole thing out. What she lacked for the time being, was skill in using the information. Avery could get that however. If not, then there were other ways to get at what she needed. If she couldn’t work it out for herself, there were beings in the world who could.

  Like Tarsus, the Librarian.

The trouble there was that she really didn’t have anything to trade for it. Also, she probably didn’t need to. The Greater Demons, several of them, shared that with her clearly. After all, Link and Tommi had been murdered. They belonged to The Technician, or The Rotted. They were also Humans from Zack’s area of control. Either way, there were already forces moving to destroy the guilty.

All she had to do was stay connected and ready. Then, when the time came, she might just be there to get some retribution of her own.

In the meantime, Avery had a script reading to go to.

To that end, she reviewed how to act. It wouldn’t hurt anything, and might even help.

Then, recalling what she’d done before, she focused her mind and shut off her feelings for a while. Otherwise far too much from the night before was going to come back and hit her, all too soon. A tiny trickle of something tried to fight its way into her thoughts then, even as she did her best to battle it away. It was fear.

Not for herself, or even her friends. They might be in danger, but most of them would be fine, in the end. No, she felt fear for what she was going to do to the evil beings that had harmed her friends and those other innocent people, when she found them.

Then she stopped feeling that as well.

They didn’t deserve that much consideration.

  Not any longer.

  Possibly, not ever again.
