Silverlock (Prologue Books) Page 42

by John Myers Myers

  “Help! Man overboard!”

I thought my cry wasn’t going to reach the two sailors lounging at the stern rail; but after several repetitions one started running toward the bridge, while the other stayed to keep an eye on me. Waving in response to his shout of encouragement, I trod water, waiting to get my breath back.

A ship that size couldn’t stop or turn around in less than a mile or so, and the life boats would need additional time to locate me at dusk in a rough sea. Yet I knew they would find me if I managed to keep afloat. A wave swept over me, but I shook the white belt of hair out of my eyes and started swimming strongly. Until the body melts and the brain ceases to gel, a man who has come out whole after having been put through his paces by the Delian has a heart for living.
