Jenia Yudytska is a gem. I was hoping for your feedback on the depiction of Russian culture, and you gave me so much more, including historical context and new ideas, and steering me away from bad ones. Anything that’s still wrong is probably something you pointed out to me and I ignored for silly plot reasons. Спасибо.

Polly read some of the earliest drafts of this book, listened to countless sessions of me agonizing over how to make it work while we ate gelato, and even speed-read it before I sent it to agents. Thank you for laughing at all my terrible notes to myself. This book would have been a mess without you.

Donna Muñoz, thank you for being my first champion, and for pushing me to enter Pitch Wars. The world needs your stories.

Iain McCaig…I admire you to the moon and back. Thank you for talking plot structure to me while I was in Disney World. Thank you for your valuable time, and for gushing over how great Baba Yaga is. You made this book so much better.

To other friends who supported this endeavor with their encouragement, homes, cups of tea, who reminded me to take care of myself, and who celebrated every win—Kathy, Claire, Lauren, Sarah, Graci, Miqdad, the MGicalMisfits, the Welly Wonkadoodles, KidLit 411, Sub It Club, KidLit Alliance, and Roaring 20s group—thank you forever.

I saved my family for last, even though they were first. My mom, to whom this book is dedicated, encouraged me from a young age to be proud of our Russian and Polish background and to feel joy and pride in the culture. This book is my love letter and thank-you to you for everything. I hope Grandpa and Grandma would have liked it. And to Dad, Sabrina, Maia, and Matt, thank you for being a loving and supportive family, who have always encouraged me in whatever new dream I decided to chase, whether it was moving across the world or writing this book. I love you.
