  “Aye, she’s a sweet kid.”

  “She’s not a kid, she’s thirty something, isn’t she?”

“Yes and I am a millennium and a half, so how do you think that would work out?”

  Val chuckled.

Elijah put his arm around Val. “You’re the one I belong with, haven’t you figured that out by now?” He drew her in close.

Val buried her head in his chest.

  Chapter 76 Three Days Later

Mary and Mari rushed into Elijah’s room. Val and Elijah had been playing a game with the girls. Eva was showing them how she could move the cards without touching them.

“You have to see this.” Mary pulled Val from her seat.

“All right, all right. What’s going on?” Val freed herself from Mary’s grip.

They moved quickly through the tunnels to where Elda and Silvia were once held. The barred door was wide open. And inside the cell stood Elda and Silvia.

  Val’s mouth fell open.

“Oh ye of little faith.” Elda laughed.

“You’re here. You’re back?” Val ran to them. She thought her arms would go right through them when she tried to hug them but they did not. “You’re here — in the flesh?”

“Yes but only for a short time. We were sent to give you a message.” Elda said.

Val stepped back. Many vampires gathered around. They were already growing restless and it had only been three days. Any excitement was of much interest.

“What’s it like on the other side?” Val asked.

“It’s wonderful. Yet, as you can imagine, the Great Mother and Father were not happy to see us. They were anxiously awaiting the return of their beloved daughters. It took some convincing — on the Great Mother’s part — but they have decided to be merciful. The good news is that your girls can stay here with you.”

“I’m assuming there’s bad news?” Teller asked.

“You see the problem is that the girls are very powerful. They were not meant to live past their thirteenth birthday — the time when they discovered their true potential. They have the ability to cause immense damage.

  “What damage?” Val asked.

“What the Great Mother and Father hold most dear — nature’s delicate balance.”

“We would never do anything to hurt the earth,” Eva said.

Val had scarcely noticed that the twins had caught up with the vampires.

“Well, as long as that’s true, the two of you may remain here on earth,” Elda said.

“That’s not bad news,” Vallachia said.

“There’s more. The girls are not vampires, as you well know, and they are not fully human either. They are divine. Yet they will age, though be it slowly. They will continue to grow and eventually die. They are not immortal.”

Val looked at Teller and smiled. “Then we’ll enjoy every moment we’re allowed with them.”

  Teller picked Vera up.

“We have to go,” Elda said.

  “Wait!” Val ran forward.

“Don’t be sad for us. We’re right where we belong. Adela, Ramdasha, even my father, we’re all together.” Elda took Silvia’s hand and they began to evaporate into white smoke.

“Thank you.” Val whispered, as she reached for Elda. Her hand found nothing as it passed through the smoke.

  Epilogue Forty Days Later

Vallachia and all of her companions emerged cautiously from the tunnels. The golden light of the curse was gone. Val headed straight for the meadow to the south. The crystals remained in a perfect circle, as if nothing had happened there. No sign of John and his men could be seen. It was as if they had simply vanished. The meadow was normal and peaceful. Val knelt down next to the spot where Elda and Silvia had disappeared and the great curse had risen from the earth. While stuck in the tunnels, Val had carved a patriarchal cross out of a large rock. It was the size of a headstone. She forced the cross deep into the ground. “I can never thank you enough. You saved me. You saved us all.”
