His Toughest Call Page 17

by Joss Wood

“I can’t walk away from Pytheon, Leah, not yet. I would be thrilled if you moved back to the States to be with me but if you can’t see yourself doing that then we’ll do the long distance, fly over when we can option, at least until that bastard is caught. Then I can, I think, move on, do something else. I’m battling with the idea of leaving Pytheon but I’m willing to consider the possibility. I’d do anything for you Leah...anything.”

Leah blinked, her eyes owl wide. His words were in English but they made as much sense as Farsi.

Seth snapped his fingers in front of her face to break her astounded stare. “You with me, angel?”

“You want me? With you?” Leah asked, her voice laced with insecurity.

He swiped his thumb across her full, trembling, bottom lip. “Always.”

“Then you meant what you said, on the mountain?”

“That I love you? Of course I meant that. Why would you think otherwise?”

Leah managed a small laugh. “I thought you said it under duress, because of the situation.”

Seth wound his arm around Leah’s waist and in one easy movement pulled her on to his lap. He buried his face in her hair. “I meant every word. I love you, I always will.” He said, his voice vibrating with an emotion she thought she’d never hear. “I was so damn scared I’d lose you.”

Leah turned her head to kiss his throat. “I’m not that easy to lose. I love you, too, in case you were wondering.”

Leah watched as the last of his reservations, his fears about a relationship disappeared from his eyes. Together they could do anything, be anything, experience everything. “You are my heartbeat, Leah. You are the place my soul looks for when I need peace. And faith. And hope.”

Leah wrapped her arm around his neck and held him close. She inhaled his scent and, for the first time in her life, her heart felt safe.

Leah tipped her head back and she saw her happiness reflected in her eyes. She knew it would follow them for the rest of their lives.

“So, hotshot, what you doing for the rest of your life?” she asked, laughter coating her words.

Her lover’s cocky smile made her heart flip over. “You, sweetheart. I’m doing you.”

  About the Author

Joss Wood’s passion for putting black letters on a white screen is only matched by her love of books and travelling (especially to the wild places of Southern Africa) and, possibly, by her hatred of ironing and making school lunches.

After juggling a career in business lobbying and economic development with writing, and somehow managing to produce sixteen books, Joss now spends her days creating contemporary fairy tales. She lives in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa with her husband and two children surrounded by family, friends, animals and a ridiculous amount of reading material.
